If I get an economy fare using the Qantas staff/family/friends sale, can it be upgraded (using points) to business? If so, what is the point cost? (Same as e.g. a Sale fare? same as a Flex fare?)

We did, this time last year we flew SYD HKG SYD booked in PE using a Qantas family and friends sale.Requested an upgrade to J using points and it came through.

Cant remember how many points it cost but can look it up if you're interested. I was traveling with my family of 4.

No, normal economy rules apply. So considering it's an economy sale fare, this can't be upgraded using points.

If you book premium or business, then you will be able to upgrade using points (as per normal commercial fare rules).

The offer clearly states what fare bucket it books into. Check out the Qantas website to figure out if its upgradeable and how many points you'd require.
