What has been your recent experience with upgrades (paid or free) on SQ?

I am an Elite Gold member and have never been offered a free upgrade whether travelling on business or economy class.

Also, for a paid upgrade to biz on an upcoming trip, MEL-LHR, I was quoted AUD 3,320 (on a flexi saver).

SQ are notoriously stingy with operational upgrades, just about non-existent by all accounts, but I've had good (around 80%) success using points.

In days gone by I have had a number of upgrades Y to J - I too was Elite Gold at the time - flt must be 'oversold' though - was usually the MEL-SIN leg.

I have also had 1 upgrade J to F on 747 SIN-MEL - I was on J saver and was flying with a friend who paid full J fare - he was so pissed off when I got the upgrade - could not count the number of times I have been forced to remind him over the years.

I guess this is not much help when you are seeking 'recent experience' but will still be same - if flt 'oversold' you will stand a chance - SQ do strictly allocate upgrades depending on status so you might be lucky.

Thanks. Did you have to be waitlisted on any of the 'points' award flights? I was looking at LHR-MEL later on in the year for am award biz ticket and most savers are waitlisted.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Looks like both MEL-SIN and SIN-LHR are overbooked but no I seats visible, only a few Ds. I also have a friend that was upgraded from J to F on a flight to Tokyo :)

Even PPS and Solitaire PPS members report no free upgrades (opups) from Singapore Airlines. As PPS I don't expect anything (and have never had free upgrade). As KF Gold I wouldn't expect anything different.

Paid upgrade would at best cost the difference between fare you paid and the lowest fare in upgraded class. Same as QF and many other carriers.

SQ have a very premium J product and quite premium F product so it seems reasonable that they don't go out of their way to give it away for free.

(I have never had opup with QF as WP either. But IMHO SQ's points upgrade system is much better than QF's as it gives you certainty straight away if you can avoid Waitlist)

Have been PPS for about 1 year after switching from BMI.

Never had op up from J to F often travelling on full J class a380 flights.

This year travelled once in economy Syd-sin-sgn rtn and got op up from sin-Syd on full flight.

That's it.

Don't hear of many (any?) long haul upgrades, they manage loads very tightly. As a PPS I have been upgraded on several short haul sectors (such as between SIN & CGK, MNL and even BOM) - CGK and MNL more than once. Particularly successful on Friday afternoons coming back to SIN. As an elite on any other program I would consider chances of an op-up are probably very very low.

SQ have always 'guarded" their premium cabins, much more so of late, so as stated chances of an op-up are always low.. no matter what elite status.
Best to book & pay appropriately for your desired level of comfort. ;)

They also don't discount upgrades at the airport, any upgrade price quoted is the fare difference from the fare you paid to the new booking class.

Similar experiences, 4-5 years ago I was on a roll and had several Y-J upgrades, even 1 J-F, but recently not so good (in fact went 3 years without one despite flying 6-7 time per year on SQ). Last one was SIN-MEL on a A380 which was a bonus :)

I regularly do the SIN/MNL/SIN sectors quite often, & rarely receive an op-up from Y > J nowadays, compared to previous years, when it occurred quite often, though frequency of flights have increased considerably since then, & it was usually when flights were 'oversold" though I never expect it travelling in Y nowadays & the 777 regional J is never been that desirable IMO.
Though it can & does happen on other sectors, sparsely & randomly when least expected. :D

I have never had an op-up on SQ, but have had several on QF. My experience is that you;re more likely to be stuck by lightning than to get an op-up on SQ (particularly as a Gold KF member - even PPS and Solitaire PPS don't get them)

I believe it would have been, this was just last August. I have been KF Gold for 6 years straight now, so evidence that Gold can get an op up :)
As I said I regularly got op up ex MEL some years back when I was KF Gold - flts were regularly oversold.

Those lovely days of being sat in the ordinary SQ lounge in MEL and they call your name, show me the blue :)
In fact I remember being called when I had paid for my ticket and my +1 was with me on a points ticket....so they upgraded her as well :)

Oh.. yes.. those were the days ;)
Just have been a tad nostalgic of late, pulling out my many old Raffles Class BPs'
The well refined unrobotic service, sliced fruits of your desire is ever no more.. :(

Any luck with points upgrades? Have been checking on expertflyer for several SQ flights and although there seems to be plenty of available seats there are none on I and O. What am I supposed to do with these miles?
