Hi all,

have managed to get an upgrade to qantas business on QF10 LHR to MEL for today for my husband and I. Very pleased as we have never flown business long haul before.

however on going to the seat allocation page there weren't two seats together ( I have got 20B & 20E so we're separated by the aisle.

What is the likelihood of being able to obtain two seats together when we checkin at the airport? Does anyone know?

thanks in advance for any help

First option would be to call QF and ask if they can seat you together, if this fails, the second option is to ask at check-in. If still unsuccessful, sometimes asking in the lounge or at the gate can work. Last resort (and I have to admit I don't like when people do it) is to ask the cabin crew after boarding. I find cabin crew very accommodating with these requests, but I hate being asked if I mind changing seat:evil:.

defurax has outlined the way to do it but at the end of the day you need to decide what is most important, sitting together or travelling in business.

If asked to move to accommodate an upgraded couple wanting to sit together I would refuse. I chose my seat when I booked 11 months previously and unless I was moved to F then would be annoyed to even be asked.

I'd say 50/50 (things do move around a bit on the day of a flight). But will you let us know what happens, please?

I will ask again at check in and keep fingers crossed. I wouldn't ask an attendant once onboard but I would possibly ask the person sitting next to me (20F?) in the middle two seats, if they wished to swap with my husband, who's in 20B. If they say no, that's cool, I won't make an issue, but I'm a fidgety flyer and will probably be up and down a lot and end up talking across the aisle to my husband, which may disturb other passengers and is what I'm hoping to avoid!! Will check in nice & early and hopefully they can help. Will keep you posted!!

The difficulty is that the passenger sitting in the middle may have chosen to do so because they may not want anyone climbing over them to get out to the aisle.

Asking them to take an aisle seat, with a window beside, means they get bothered every time the window seat wants to get past. Or every time a cabin attendant wants to pass over drinks, meals, bread and tea/coffee to the person on the window.

If you think your talking is going to be a problem for other passengers - try and minimise it. Unfortunately it is not their problem you cannot be seated side-by-side. And you should perhaps avoid creating a situation where it is uncomfortable for everyone if they have chosen not to move and you end up 'needing' to talk just to make a point. (At least - that's what it might look like to the other passengers.)

however - you have the benefit of a dedicated business class lounge area where you can sit with your husband and talk :)

Exactly - this happened to me a couple of years ago, and even when I explained politely that I had chosen my seat specifically, nearly a year beforehand, the male half of the couple was really nasty about it, and kept saying things like what a shame it would be if the fact that he wasn't next to his wife meant he had to bump other passengers awake getting out of his seat during the night, every ten minutes or so. (Interestingly, he didn't ask any of the other male passengers to move, only me, a woman travelling alone. Thug.) His wife was clearly embarrassed and eventually he subsided and claimed to have been joking. I get almost all my SCs travelling in economy and had saved up for my J ticket, and it was very unpleasant, especially when it boiled down to another person assuming he had the right to expect me to put his comfort before my own.

Just to show I'm not a total cough, I have happily on several occasions offered to give up my seat so other can sit together, especially older people. But this once, I wanted the seat I had chosen and paid for.

I too do this. As long as it's not a really coughpy seat being offered in exchange.

Thanks. As I say, I won't make a fuss as happened to another poster, I'm certainly not like that. But I've paid a lot of money for our tickets (originally in PE) and then points to upgrade, so if I want to chatter with my husband during a 24 hour flight, I will do!!

that's a shame. Because your first business class flight is unlikely to be as enjoyable as it could be. :(

... Let alone how unpleasant it will be for the unfortunate pax between you who did nothing but pay full price and book well in advance. Perhaps if sitting next to each other is so important to you, it would be better to refuse the upgrade this time and save the points for a better opportunity when you can sit together?

Also, if you feel like chatting and sharing a few drinks there is always the "Red couch" in the "lounge" by the front stairs. It gets very dark in the dormitory (row 15-22) after dinner and the lounge is a nice place to chat or read. I spend most of the flight there anyway...drinking and reading The Economist:confused:

That's an excellent suggestion :)
It wouldn't bother me in the slightest if I wasn't sat next to Shrek on a flight which was a last minute booking/upgrade/op-up etc.
My advice to the OP is to ask at check-in and/ or in the Lounge. The latter will probably be a better proposition. That will give the staff a chance to ask other pax discreetly if they are prepared to move to accommodate your request. If that's not successful then I personally wouldn't ask onboard. It puts the other passenger in a very awkward position.
YMMV

Thanks for input. Asked at check in and a lovely lady named Aliya helped and seated us together in 17E/F. I'd pre booked my seats together in PE ages ago and if I'd known there was a chance we wouldn't be seated together I never would have asked for the upgrade.

But all's well that ends well as the check in lady was very understanding and helpful.

Glad you have got seats together without bothering anyone else :) Hope your husband is just as glad :D:p

Being asked to swap seats is never an easy one.

I don't mind helping out but not for people who expect everyone else to move so they can get their way.

Oh and I wouldn't appreciate being asked to move to a worse seat than what I have already been allocated.

Common courtesy still comes into it as well IMHO
