What is the best way to use FF points to obtain Business seating.

I see two options, using points outright or buying economy, then use points to upgrade.

As there are limited seating for upgrades, whats the best method to ensure J seating.

Flight departure date is only flexible within three days. Wanting to fly to Tampa late next year for an event, have quite a few points accumulated.

Thanks

Have you enough for a JASA? That would also earn points and SCs.

... and upgradeable Y tickets may not be inexpensive!

And you will not be be to upgrade from LAX to Tampa as that will be an AA aircraft

As all posts above go for a reward flight (classic or JASA) now.
Forget about points upgrade:- you are unlikely to win the upgrade lottery. Its drawn on the day of the flight: not when you make the reservation.

Understand that, its the main leg that needed the legroom. (either DFW or JKF)

Was thinking of booking early but its not on the site yet, The dates of the event have not been finalised either

LOL, :D:pThat my friend is a question all of us would love the answer to and I dont think it would be given away on this forum if anyone of us knew it.
I do have a secret though, to ensure business class seating you need to buy a business class fare you are then most definitely guaranteed one..

Nor is there any guarantee of an upgrade.

Looked at that, the conditions don't look good. Then its your status and 24 hours prior.

Maybe better to go PE and buy a Qantas club membership to use the lounges.

Log in at 353 days before the date you want to travel and see if you can get either a Classic Award or Any Seat Award in business to LAX/DFW/JFK.
If not take out a subscription to ExpertFlyer and set up alerts for U class on these flights.
If you have a lot of points you may be able to get a partner award on CX via HKG
Relying on a points upgrade from economy is likely to end in tears IME
Good Luck :)

PE is pretty good. If I was paying cash I would quite possibly do that. Although it's probably not an economical use of points, buying PE then using points + pay to knock a couple thousand bucks off works if the points supply is promising.

There is no need to pay for business or premium economy if you just want extra legroom. Just buy the cheapest economy fare then pay for exit row seats.

I haven't paid for exit rows within Australia. But I take your point.

Another reason to go a class above is to get priority on arrival, better food, service and legroom. At least I can get some sleep on long trips. :)

Chances of upgrade success probably also depend on what status you are, if you don't have much, then probably unlikely to win in the upgrade lottery...

Generally speaking, if you want more legroom you're of a stature to want more shoulder room as well. :)

I'm not that bad, just don't like my knees tucked up under my chin, then having the seat in front dropped down in one foul swoop or knees pushing through my seat.
