Hi,

The missus and I are travelling to Hawaii and I am contemplating putting in for upgrades to J. I know it's a remote chance with the Qantas lottery, but if you don't try...

Anyway, my questions are:

1. If we are unsuccessful, do they refund the points (do they take them at time of request?)
2. There's something about an upgrade right to the last minute, but this may result in only premium economy - I don't want this - for me, if I can't get J, I don't want to spend the points
3. Most importantly, there's two of us - is there a chance that only one of us would get the upgrade, because again, this would end in tears (most likely mine)

Thanks all!

Re: Qantas upgrade question

1. Points aren't taken unless upgrade is successful.
2. You can opt for J only or J/Y+ when you make the request.
3. If you're on the same booking then no chance - it's all or none.

Opusman is correct
But no PE on any A330 used on QF3/4

The only exception is whether the both of you are travelling on the one booking. If so refer to opusman's answer. If separate bookings then there might be tears

I have had a 100% success rate with QF3 on two occasions - early Feb 2015 on a Wed & mid-March 2016 onna Sun receiving notification at T-60 and T-52 respectively as a QF WP.

Both times we purchased an upgradeable Saver fare on the outbound QF3 leg and a non- upgradeable Sale fare on the return QF leg which is a day flight so not a deal breaker to travel in whY.

Just double checking that:

a) You are booked on QF3/QF4 - not JQ3/JQ4 or the QF code share flights (QF283/QF284?) which are operated by JQ and cannot be used for points upgrades as flights must be QF metal.

b) You have booked an upgradeable fare eg Saver or above for the sectors you hope to upgrade. The fare rules of each fare always state if the fare is eligible

c) Make sure you tick the box that allows you to opt-in

d) Do the points upgrade from the person's account who holds the higher ff tier status with QF

e) Ensure that you will have the points required for the uograde in that person's account around 7 days prior to travel eg a Saver fare is 48,000 pp so you would need a min 96,000 points in your account.

Remember your 'Missus' is welcome to transfer her points to your account and the family tranafer is immediate.

Re: Qantas upgrade question

Awesome, thanks for all the info guys. It's definitely showing as QF3 and we're on the same booking so I guess I'll give it a whirl and see how we go. If upgrade is an option (on the Qantas website) wouldn't that suggest that they're upgradeable fares? I'm 'S' fares on the outbound leg, Q coming back (which is perhaps why the HNL-SYD fare is not available?).

I noticed that the first line of "upgrade at the airport" is as follows:

  • Only single passenger bookings on Qantas operated flights with a Qantas (QF) flight number will be awarded upgrades at the airport.
and reading the T&Cs seems to confirm that since we're two pax on a booking, I can't or shouldn't select the upgrade at airport option...

Anyway, I'm only silver, so I guess it's a very long shot, but who knows...

Thanks again for everyone's help!

Hi YYC Chris

S fare is eligible to be upgraded. Q fare is not (fares not eligible for upgrade are ENOQ). The upgradeability is just an "eligibility", there being other more powerful factors that determine upgrade success such as Tier Status.

Upgrade at airport/gate will be valid only for single passenger booking. So if >1 passenger you will not get an upgrade using this method at the airport/gate. Of course operational upgrades do occur. The +1 passenger must be an eligible family member.

However PS status vastly lowers any upgrade chances.

But you got to be in it to win it.

Re: Qantas upgrade question

WE got an upgrade on the way over and back for only one seats and we shared it equally 90% to my 10 %. She was happy

Re: Qantas upgrade question

Just go for it, unless I'm saving for something special I'll always put in for upgrades whenever it's offered for long haul. Worst that will happen is you'll be unsuccessful and you'll end up in the seat you've paid for.

Well, that's true, unless what Traveller1955 says is true - I don't want to be stuck in the back! :p

Thanks guys!

Seems fair? In fact you could consider yourself lucky you got 10% use of the upgrade.

Glad things worked out for you CC. Have you allocated your seats yet & ordered your meals via Qeat?

Done - we have a gluten free so she couldn't choose and I've chosen mine. We were allocated 3E and 3F with only row 6 aisle and window available. Checking on Seat Guru row 3 is close to the galley but row 6 is close to Economy with the bassinets so we opted to stay in row 3. :) What else am I missing? Squee, very excited! I have lounge access already sorted through Qantas Club, Amex lounge in Sydney (if we have time) and either Veloce or Priority Pass in HNL.

Quick question - not that I need it, but in terms of baggage, as a Qantas Club member I get an additional bag, does this carry through on Hawaiian airlines since Qantas is the international flight? Also, would we have gotten more bags with upgraded J or do we still get Y baggage? More for education for next time, we don't need that much stuff!

Thanks

Re: Qantas upgrade question

If it's the outbound flight you got upgraded on you should be careful about taking the full J amount of luggage. If you don't also get upgraded coming home you would find that you have to pay for excess baggage or discard some stuff.

Anyway in my experience it is better to pack light and not lug too much luggage around (if only travelling domestically I try to only take carry on, but for an overseas trip I would check in some luggage)

You don't get the J baggage allowance if you are upgraded at the gate (as your bags would already be checked in before you know you have the upgrade), but upgraded beforehand like you have been you would get the J allowance.

This page should answer your questions: Checked Baggage Allowance | Qantas

Thanks, I share your philosophy but sometimes Mrs calgarychris doesn't.

Re: Qantas upgrade question

The checked baggage allowance page does indicate that any extra allowance for QANTAS Club wouldn't apply on Hawaiian Airlines. I assume you'd get the J allowance on Hawaiian but you could give QANTAS a call to verify.

It's okay, it's more for education for next time. We're only taking 3 bags between the two of us.

Thanks though!
