My wife and I are flying to Santiago on QF27 in March 2015, we booked before the code share arrangement came into place with LAN/TAM for the next flight on to Sao Paulo (same day).

We are now looking at trying to upgrade using points from discount economy to Premium Economy or Business. That would be the same number of points for either Santiago or Sao Paulo, does anyone know if we can change the flight numbers on our tickets to the Qantas codeshare or is it too late?

I am very inexperienced in this game so any help I would be grateful for.

ALSO is it worth in your opinion, the difference of 54,000 points for us both to fly business over premium economy?

Thanks in advance

Ross & Yvonne

Hi there!

Do you know which fare class you are booked in? You can find this in Manage my booking.
This will determine whether you can upgrade or not, however usually in discount economy the answer is no.
Alternatively you can click on the upgrade button in Manage my booking it will tell you if you are eligible or not.

As for changing your flight number from LAN/TAM to a QF number you could only do this via the QF reservations call centre(although you cannot upgrade on codeshare flights) you will get more points and SC's on a QF code, there may or may not be a fee involved, no harm in asking.

G'day Ross & Yvonne,
Yes, I think it would be worth it on such a long sector such as SYD-SCL to try to get into J (Business) over Premium Economy. Absolutely.

re the QF codeshare on your connecting flight out of SCL - it really doesn't matter, as even with a QF flight number on it, if the flight is operated by another carrier (eg: TAM or LAN) you have no upgrade option with QF points on those sectors anyway so sadly leave it as is, and work on the QF27 upgrades.. I think you were asking in reference to that. The only reason you could want to change to a QF# is for points/SC accural, and there's some argument there but as noted already it may incur a charge, possibly even a refare on the whole itin, to achieve, so probably still not worth it in my view.

best of luck!

Not necessarily. You get more SC but less points. I am booked on QF27 in June and the QFF points earn is half of the LAN operated rate. ie book lan and you always get double the points...(thanks to the QF double point special, I get the best of both worlds!)

I was more referring to the OP's Santiago to Sao Paulo flight on LAN/TAM, in this case booking on a QF code should net you more points/SC's.

Thanks to everybody for their responses. I contacted customer service at Qantas re: upgrading and although we are 8,000 points short of the required 144K she put in an upgrade request and stated that if we had not earned enough points by March to purchase the difference. She was very helpful & friendly.

Just as an aside my ticket is with my AA number and my wife's with her QFF number, I reckon that AA points are more valuable than QFF, we are booked on an award flight in business class courtesy of AA points from LHR to SYD (OF2) in April, it was a lot easier to book and a lot less points than Qantas.

ah, given this new information that one of you is crediting to AA and the other QF that changes things slightly - only in the outcome dept because one set of earn rules (AA) will apply for one pax, and the other set (QF) for the other. sounds like the upgrade points will come from the QFF account for both. It's nice of the agent to put the request in even though you don't have the points balance to support it. Good luck on the trip and enjoy. Sounds like you're heading around the world :)

Yes we are flying to Brazil for a three week cruise across the Atlantic ending in Italy, then flying back from the UK. Then it's time to churn the credit cards for more bonus miles, and buy some AA/U.S., Avianca Life Miles miles when they are on "special", for our 2016 trip ..........
