I am a newby to FF programmes. Can anyone help as to whether I would have a better chance of getting an upgrade with QFF ( basic bronze level) or Malaysia Enrich. Will be transferring Westpac altitude points. Thanks for your help.

i am flying Sydney to Rome ( may ) paris to Sydney ( june). Flying economy. hoping for upgrade to business. My travel agent has given me a quote on Malaysian airlines flight but am not sure whether to book this or look into qantas and request an upgrade through their FF.

QF doesnt fly its own metal to Rome or Paris so the only legs able to be upgraded would be between Australia and SE Asia, assuming fare is eligible for upgrade and there is availability.

Its probably worth checking whether MH flies its own aircraft on this route or codeshares, since a similar restriction on not being able to upgrade codeshares is likely.

It looks like MH flies into Rome and does not codeshare. Can I assume then that both would be the same in terms of upgrade depending on availability. Qantas only to SE Asia and MH to Rome. I guess I was just wondering if upgrades are easier to arrange on one airline over another.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

With QF international upgrades are not confirmed in advance (at least until processed close to departure) so need to sweat it out. They are also very expensive requiring lots of points.

As to how likely there will be availability - depends on when you fly (christmas is a peak time for example with no chance), day of week (Friday through Monday are busier business travel days), choice of flight (some connect better and thus more through pax, or more convenient flight timing). Etc.

KUL is not a bad airport to connect. There is plenty of variety of places to sit and eat including Burger King, Starbucks etc and more up-market places. If you do get the upgrade, then the MH Golden Lounge is very nice too.

In both directions, the SYD-KUL and KUL-SYD sectors will be day-time, while the KUL-FCO and CDG-KUL will be overnight.

In most cases, upgrade availability will be better on days of the week when less business travel takes place. So that generally means you should aim for travel on Tuesday-Thursday rather than Friday-Monday.

I am not familiar with MH's upgrade policy and whether they offer confirmed upgrades.

Starbucks has free wireless, i think it was Starbucks, thats in KUL.

Thing i really dislike about KUL is lack of lounges ! if your a oneworld flyer your stranded as far as i am aware.

Still airport is fine to wander around, couple of coffee shops etc.

There is a CX lounge at KUL and as CX is the only OneWorld carrier currently operating to/from KUL, that is not a problem. The only down-side with the CX lounge is lack of showers and the toilets are outside the lounge (a very short walk).

AY will commence KUL-HEL flights later this year, so soon to be another OneWorld option. JAL also serve KUL, so when they join OneWorld in the next few months there will be even more options.

The MH First Class lounge is excellent.

Have flown MH a few times and found them to be Ok. Only flown economy though. How does MH compare to Qantas ? Both in economy and business.I have only flown business with Thai and Garuda so have not much to compare with.

I have only flown them short-haul (SIN-KUL and KUL-SIN in 734 an A330 aircraft) in both F and Y. Based on those experience, I have no complaints. Several colleagues have used them SYD-KUL and BNS-KUL and again they have no complaints when comparing with Qantas. Their new business class cabin looks very nice from the pictures posted all over KUL airport.

However, I always have in the back of my mind that Qantas had maintenance problems with two ex-MH 744s they added to their fleet in the late 1990s. Cracks were found that were the result of not following Boeing's defined processes for removing paint when the aircraft were still owned by MH.
