Hi All,

I called into my travel agent today to make a payment for my trip with my final payment due tomorrow.

I asked them to see how much it would cost to upgrade from RTW H class ticket (which I have) to business from SYD to CLE leg of the trip. My travel agent called UA (call centre in Manila I assume) who advised that to upgrade would cost me an additional $7,000AUDeach for myself and partner, and I could only upgrade for all legs not just 1 leg of the trip.

They also advised that I could upgrade using 30k points for each ticket but there is a waiting list.

My trip will be 5th Sept and return 23 Oct 07

Flights
SYD, (CHANGE IN SFO), ORD, CLE
CLE, IAD, JFK,
JFK, IAD, IAD LHR
LHR, VIE, ATH
ATH, SIN, SYD.

We would like to upgrade on the longest leg and since I cannot utilise my Altitude points I'm assuming I could buy the UA Miles and upgrade with those or wait till check in and try an upgrade at the counter using cash?

How much would I expect to pay at the counter? Anyone Know?

Can I upgrade just 1 leg or do I have to do all legs?

If I use points to upgrade are the seats guaranteed booked 3 months out?

I understand that by purchasing the points they will not count towards Premier or 1k status but will my normal H class count as normal if I decided to buy points for the upgrade?

Basically after I'm after any advice on how we can upgrade to business the best way possible from our H class tickets.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Hi Alien,

You have some interesting questions there.

My view is that it's probably not worth your while to purchase miles (30,000 miles cost approx USD 850). With no status, I don't think your chances are that great to get an upgrade in advance of your flight date (I've checked the UA website and none are currently available for your SYD-SFO flight). And what would you do with the miles if you don't get the upgrade?

I think your best bet is to enquire about purchasing an upgrade when you check in. If available, it will cost you about USD 600. It won't have any impact on you earning MP miles for the flights, either. Note that a UA upgrade will only apply to UA flights that have a connect time of 12 hours or less. Non-UA flights won't be covered.

Hope that helps a bit. This Flyertalk thread should also be useful:

Good luck...

Hi Clifford

Thanks for the reply.

I think your right I would be better off just trying my luck at the check in which is what I will do.

Again thanks.
