Hello,

Long time watcher - first time writer!

I have booked a SYD - LAX flight for wife and I on Oct 9 on QF011. The travel class is "O" and I'm looking to upgrade. Pretty sure this is impossible due to class but I have a points to burn (700k).

I am a member of QP but back to Bronze after not travelling for work.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Correct, O class is a non-upgradeable fare. In the second half of last year there were reports that QF were calling some lucky passengers booked in these discount Y seats and offering them upgrades, sometimes for less points than it would normally cost. However, this seems to be long gone.

If you have 700k points you could try ringing Qantas and asking them for an exception but I wouldn't be hopeful.

The other option is to look at upgrading your fare to a higher Y class (B, G, H, K, L, M, S and V), assuming it's economical to do so.

Pity you are not going two days later, there is an Any Seat Award for 116000 points for travel on QF141 to AKL then QF25 to LAX in J, coupled with a cheap return ticket purchased from the US for travel home it could have been a good blend of points versus spend. No A380 but J in the A330 is not that bad!

Thinking of alternatives have you considered searching for points flights in J and getting a credit to your account for your bought tickets?
Look for departure points out of the east coast and not just Sydney.
You will enjoy it.
