I am booked economy (S) MEL-LHR-MEL in October and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade using QFF for part of the journey only (say HK-LHR going and/or SIN-MEL on the return leg)? The Upgrade page of the QF site lists 96K points each way for the whole trip but is silent on a partial upgrade (at least as far as can tell). Anyone have an idea please?

I'm not keen to use 192K points on top of the paid fare but might consider a more judicial approach for the longer segments...otherwise it might just be knees under the chin for 24hrs each way again.:(

You can only upgrade "half way" if you have booked separate flight numbers.

If it's booked as a single flight the whole way through, you cant do a partial upgrade.

Bummer! Thanks for clarifying. This might just turn out to be the shortest first post thread...

I will have enough points myself before I go - just don't want to "waste" them all on the upgrade. Intend to try for a business QFF trip to the UK in a year or two if I don't touch them in between but thought, if it was possible to use some for the longer legs of this coming trip, it might be a good option.

And you've probably ruined my claim for the shortest first post thread on record now... (but thanks for the comments/suggestions anyway!). :D

Its worth putting in for the upgrade anyway, sometimes you will only be granted the upgrade on one sector and be charged for that 1 - so is worth a gamble..

Is there any way to speak to the TA to get it ticketed as separate segments? You might also then earn more SCs and have more options on UG? Obviously that will come at a cost - but nothing in life is obtained without cost :)

Are you sure about that? I have never heard of an example where a single through ticket such as SYD-LHR has resulted in a single sector upgrade. Do you know an example where that happened?

I've seen many a post on AFF where for example, SYD-SIN-LHR is the route and the person has only been upgraded SIN-LHR.

Were those op-ups though?

People might have requested the UG, not received it and then been op'd

That woudl be the case if the ticket was purchased as separate SYD-SIN and SIN-LHR sectors. Or in the case of operational upgrades. I have not seen any suggestions that someone with a ticket for SYD-LHR as a single segment/coupon has waitlisted for an upgrade and only been granted the upgrade part of the journey.

Some people specifically purchase the ticket as SYD-SIN and SIN-LHR on two separate coupons (on the same ticket) in order to adjust their chances for upgrades or in order to only upgrade one part of the journey. Such a strategy can also earn more SCs, but can cost more in fuel fines.
