In these situations it's often a case of personal preferences, and the circumstances surrounding the flight.

It's good to see members sharing their reasoning behind their choice(s).

Many thanks to all who contributed, the advice was much appreciated.

Opinions are divided down the middle, but the choice is either the maximum experience, or sleep. To get the best sleep on the night flight home you would have to forgo supper and breakfast, otherwise there would only be 3 or 4 hours in between the two meals.

We have only had two J flights, both on Qantas. A380 SYD-SIN daytime and night time HKG-SYD. Looking back we were still tired after arriving in Sydney.

We have decided to upgrade the daytime flight SYD-SIN and then on to BKK.

By the time the points came through there was only availability on the 777 departing at 08.30 (14H K), but we are very happy and looking forward to the trip.

I will post a trip report when we get back.

There are two things I have realised in the last few days. Firstly the wealth of knowledge the forum members have, and how willing they are to share, and secondly how much I still have to learn.

(That was also something else to consider, if you have another regional sector in the same zone (eg SYD-SIN-BKK), you can upgrade the whole journey for the same points cost).

Yes I only realised that just before I put the upgrade through.
Now also get lounge access in SIN between the flights, even if only for an hour.

after doing Syd -Sing - BCN and then ZCH -Sing on A380's recently in J, they were all magnificent.
did SQ211 last friday from Sing - SYD in J, and it was very ordinary. was very disappointed, service was ordinary, the plane was ordinary, food was ordinary.
made the mistake of not eating in the Lounge, as it was a bit early for me to eat, but when boarded and looked at the menu, due to being a Coelic, i was unable to eat any of the breakfast option, but a plate of fruit. by the time the Satay came for Nibbles pre-sydney, i was absolutely starving. my fault, food wise, and choice of flight wise too, but wanted to arrive home in sydney at evening and get a good nights sleep with no jetlag.

good luck!

For some odd reason I have found J service on A380 better than the 73A on the SYD-SIN route.
It was just the one time on the 73A, so may not be representative.
Everytime on the A380 has been great though.
