I've got business class booked with points on Qantas (one leg domestic, one international). Miss's wanted to come later so booked a sale fare.

What are the chances of getting her upgraded if there's available seats? Best to ask at check in, at the lounge, on the plane? Obviously no expectations of yes, worst they'll say is no so worth asking; unless there's no chance in which case won't bother!

7th June
Qf511
Qf19

Both show empty seats. Front was blocked out in a perfect pattern so maybe more available than I can see.

So QF511 BNE-SYD and QF19 SYD-MNL.

Have you submitted a points upgrade request for the missus? Is her fare even able to be upgraded?

Vacant seats are irrelevant, some people don't select their seats ahead of time.

Her fare isn't being a sale fare.
Ah I meant a free upgrade; unsure if it's worth asking.

Two chances, Buckley's and none.

Unless either of you are WP1 she wouldn't even be considered for a free upgrade.

You can always offer her your own seat.

Interesting. Wasn't sure, read tons of stories about all these people upgraded for no reason. My thinking was any genourisity would be abused quickly, like the old "book A and C and try and put your unpaid toddler in B" type trick.

I'm all for asking and hearing no, if it's surefire won't waste time though!

OpUps tend to occur when the lower class is oversold, and they need to shuffle pax up.

Domestically you can apply up until you are in the lounge, however this is not the case with international.
If you want your partner to be sitting in the same class as you, you'd guarantee it by purchasing a ticket in that class.

Not a huge deal, was seeing odds before asking the staff. I'm sure they get asked all the time.

They'd be fine with me switching her? I've got a oneworld itinerary so giving up 1 flight isn't too much
