Hi Guys,

New here, and need to get a bit more status credits. I've searched for the answer to this question but can't find a clear answer..

I fly economy for work probably once or twice a month, and was wondering if I upgrade to business either with points or $ will I earn business-level status credits for the flight?

I saw on the Qantas site that if I upgrade with points it will only earn the status credits for the cost of the original fare, but it's not clear.

So if I upgrade with $, do I earn business status credits?

many thanks

If you call up and pay the change fee and fare difference for business you will get business SCs. If you upgrade with points yuo will never get business SCs.

The former would be very expensive though.

However, if the ticket is booked through a travel agent they may not allow you to change it without permission from the TA.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Upgrading to Semi/Full flex may be a better return for your $$ if you can change flights yourself.

Tickets booked through a travel agent (which is likely if employer booked it) can't be changed through Qantas - the "Change" button isn't even displayed on the booking (until check-in).

And, of course, your employer likely booked cheapest available fare, which very likely isn't in an upgradable fare bucket. 90% of the time I cannot upgrade because the fare is Q or S etc. As discussed in another thread, I cannot fathom why Qantas restricts upgrades based on fare class - Emirates even allow in-flight upgrades!

Unless you are talking domestic re the upgrades.

Thanks for the info guys.

I do get the upgrade button sometimes but last time I tried to use the button it said it was too close to the travel date to upgrade.

As for fare types I can request they book "flexible" tickets, maybe that will help to ensure they are upgradable.

They do use a corporate booking agent not a regular travel agent, however I'm hopeful I can still upgrade because the button does appear... Will try it and see next time.
