There seems to be some pretty good fares available, e.g. PER-AMS in J for $5199.

Book your flight from Australia - Etihad.com

Slightly off-topic, but I also couldn't help noticing this on the bottom of the linked Etihad webpage. (I never knew there was a train to Canberra Airport - or that there were 3 terminals...)

Taking a taxi to Canberra Airport is the primary method of transport. There is also a coach service that operates during the week, allowing passengers to take a bus to Canberra Airport from certain locations.
A train terminal located between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 makes it possible for passengers to take a train to Canberra Airport in about 10 minutes from the city centre.

I think I've just found an even better deal, although it's only available ex Germany. Airberlin & Etihad are offering return flights from various cities in Germany to Melbourne for around €1,900 ($2,900) return in business class! Etihad metal can be used on all sectors, including the A380 to MEL.

Sale ends 11 April. Unfortunately, maximum stay is 1 month. Travel any time until 12 December, except between 1/7/16 and 7/9/16.

some good deals ex Europe (IST, FCO, etc) but as usual, Aussies get smashed (A$6k +) for the same flights ex AU)

I didn't realise how quick it could be to get from CBR to SYD:

Flights from Sydney depart from Sydney Airport (SYD), also known as Kingsford-Smith Airport. Sydney Airport is one of the oldest operational airports in the world and the busiest in Australia. There are 3 operating passenger terminals. Driving time is about 12 minutes from Canberra city centre, depending on traffic.

One-way or return? That's an excellent price for a return fare, but fairly average if one-way.

I actually thought it was one way... Then I checked... Over $8000 AUD

Now I remembered why I always pay for Y only.

Yes, it's just down the road from the beach didn't you know.

(We wish).

I got BKK-AUH-TXL-VIE // MUC-AUH-BNE-MEL for $2600, mostly EY J, one leg AB J, and a short hop in Niki Y (all EY flight numbers). Have booked BNE-BKK J TG with life miles to get the party started. Happy days. Will credit the EY operated flights to VFF, and the AB and Niki flights will reluctantly be credited to EY guest.

Has anyone looked into how these fares credit to AB? Could be a good way to get one world status that also works on EY and VA.

Head for points did a post on "where to credit". The fares do earn on AB, and it seems you could get TopBonus' lowest tier status with these flights alone. However, I am reluctant to do a earn a lot of AB miles without better knowledge of their redemption chart. From a small amount of research I did, the AB chart looks like its "ok" for short hop OW fares, but their long distance premium award chart is not great for ex-Oceania fares (a little better for ex-Asia or ex-North America fares). I also have no idea of partner award availability / ease of booking / call centre wait times etc, so am planning to stick with the devil I know (VFF, to a lesser extent EY guest).

That is a awesome price , did you book direct or use a 3rd party site ?

American Express Travel (Australian website) gave me the most options for the connections I wanted (eg long layovers in TXL and BNE). Had to limit my multi city search to "EY only" to get it to offer the options I was looking for. Booking direct with Etihad didn't give me the specific routing I wanted so I went with the third party site. Might have to dump BNE-MEL unless I can phone in to add a stopover.

Fare is now gone I think. You could try to hunt around for other interesting open jaws Asia-->EU-->Australia. They come and go.
