Unlawful Tokyo transfer

I used points for a return business class trip to Europe. The Qantas search engine offered me a return leg from Frankfurt via Tokyo on JAL, which sounded good, so I took it. A month or so later, when I go to put the flight details into my calendar, I notice that the ticketing has me going into Narita and out of Haneda. Puzzled, I investigate further, and find that there’s no shuttle or transfer, I have to exit Narita and make my own way to Haneda - which requires a visa. Which isn’t available. Had I not twigged, I would not have been permitted to board in Frankfurt - had I flown, I would have been entering the country illegally. Six hours of waiting on line and calls dropping out later, I finally get a valid return flight, on Emirates, 8 days after I had planned to return. After being told by several that there were no flights, and my only option was to have my points refunded and make my own way back.
I contacted a friend, who was also booked home via Tokyo. Same thing. Qantas initially told her when she called that there was no problem. The Japanese Embassy told her otherwise. She didn’t get a return flight, so had to fork out over $2k for a one way economy flight.
Anyone else experience this?

I had exactly the same flight. I called Qantas and explained that the flight combination is not possible due to visa restrictions. The Qantas service representative suggested that I cancelled my ticket and book a new one. I did not go for that. I called Qantas every day with the same request. After one week, finally, the representative got a new ticket for me departing with Jetstar from Narita (and not Haneda) anymore, free of charge and still business class (on QF points) . I am of the opinion that many people at the Qantas Customer Service are not qualified to really help the customers.

Jetstar flies from a separate building. Have you checked if you can transfer without going through immigration?

I got screwed on this as well. Had a SYD-HND-HEL booking and AY have switched to NRT (who knows why).

Was going to chance it (not til early 2023) but ended up rerouting SYD-CGK-NRT-HEL. Figured it’s a safer bet.

Japan dropping pre departure PCR testing requirements from 7 Sep and talk of increasing inbound arrival numbers and non-tour group visits. So continuing to head in the right direction….
 
Bus service runs from outside the Terminal and operates between the 2 Airports located 80km apart. There's also a train, but a change en-route is required and apparently it is slower! Bus service costs ~$35. People probably book with JAL on QF because historically there has been better award availability in business class and superior service. Clearing immigration and picking up your bags if you have them and then checking them in again is a bit of a PITA but clearly JAL think it's doable in 3.5 hrs... Pre-covid the MCT between the two airport was 3 hours, and this was easily achievable with about an hour to spare… at least for premium pax. Off one flight and collect bags, customs clearance, bus very close to the arrivals area, the ride itself, and you were dropped at the departures hall at the other end. I usually bought tickets on arrival which added a couple of minutes, and would have 30 mins in the lounge.

Sometimes the queues for economy checkin can be lengthy, but I’m sure the staff would identify anyone with an imminent flight departure.

Increasing to 3.5 hours might reflect any additional arrival formalities or document checks on the outbound, plus maybe a reduced bus frequency… per the link posted by zanzara the bus is running every 30-60 minutes now… I think they were every 30 pre covid.
