Elites don't get comp upgrades on premium routes such as LAX-EWR or SFO-EWR, that's where an RPU can be used to upgrade.

Routes such as LAX-SYD require a Global upgrade (GPU) and don't work in cheaper Y fares.

It is possible-there are F cabins on those sectors.
If flights start before 31 jan, I can try to apply.

Just wanted to give a big shout out to @ozflier.

My wife (pregnant almost 6months) and I just got the wonderful email from United that my flight from Seattle-Houston has been put on upgrade waitlist to United First which most likely should come through and have confirmed Business upgrade on Houston-Cancun in a fortnight.

Going to be a pleasant journey indeed. And also $50 USD savings in free 1st bag as part of the upgrade.
