I'm flying Economy next month and just out of curiosity, was looking at upgrade options. There's no option to upgrade to Economy Plus, just Business Class (for $3000+!).

Is such an upgrade available? I guess it wouldn't hurt asking at check in right, although depends on how much extra.

Airfare was a tad over $1300 (MEL to YVR via LAX, YEG to MEL via YVR and LAX).

In the past I’ve paid for UA Economy Plus but it’s a payment you make when selecting your seats. About an extra $200 I think.

OK, shall have a look closer to the time and decide if I'm willing to pay the extra...though is it really worth it for a mere 5in?

Have you checked the availability? There’s a good chance those seats are already taken if you’re a month out.

It’s a personal decision. I think it’s worth it if you have to go whY and don’t have any other options.

Although in this case, I was dreading whY so much I ended up booking a J class ticket so I didn’t end up trying.

You should be able to purchase an Economy Plus seat any time from booking via the seat selection page.

I've flown Economy Plus across the Atlantic a few times this year and found it did make a difference. I've been able to comfortably work on my laptop there on day flights and slept reasonably on the redeyes. I get those seats for free via UA status but would I pay $200? Probably.

An extra 5 inches brings it close to the pitch in domestic Australian business class, and US domestic First. Given the seat is quite a bit smaller than the first/business counterpart, the extra legroom is significant. But it really depends how tall you are.

The other potential advantage, if the flight is not full, is that the PEY cabin may have spare seats (and one could be next to you).
