It will simplify and speed up boarding, and enable elite customers to continue to enjoy early boarding privileges. This new process began June 10th across most of United's system.

Boarding for United First® and United Business® customers will remain the same.
Global Services members may board at any time.
United Economy® customers will no longer board by rows, but by seating areas.
Your boarding pass will inform you in which area you are seated.

Seating Area 1 Elite (Premier®, Premier Executive® and Premier Executive 1K®) and Star AllianceTM Gold and Silver Members
Seating Area 2 Economy Plus® customers

Try looking on the UA site and making a dummy booking. Previously (I haven't) tried recently they had a seating plan for each flight so you could self allocate from the available seating. Maybe it's still there :!: :?:
