I have 6,595 FlySmiles miles that are due to expire end June 2016.

If I transfer to Hhonors at 2:1 must leave 2,000 miles balance in account so essentially forfeit those miles on expiry.

If I try to use on duty free I can only use 4,595 miles and it appears 2,000 miles balance will remain in account to expire. Those miles are just enough for bottle of Jack Daniels but if would be nice to get a bottle of Smirnoff as well. ;)

I have sent them an email for clarification.

Any thoughts? Buying miles too expensive at USD50 for 2,000 miles. I have also posted same question on Facebook. Very little information available on UL FlySmiles.

Here is a response from FlySmiles - SriLankan frequent flyer to the above question.

Dear Sir/Ma’am,

Greetings from FlySmiLes, the Frequent Flyer programme of SriLankan Airlines.

Please be informed that as per the FlySmiLes Terms and Conditions, 2,000 miles have to retain in the account after the duty free voucher issuance.

And what happens to those 2,000 miles I cannot use?

We regret to inform you that the miles which remain in your account after the redemption will expire on 30[SUP]th[/SUP] June 2016.

So a bottle of Jack Daniel's it is then....

How did you go redeeming your miles? I assume you had to take a flight to get the duty free?

I was flying with UL in June anyway. I was trying to use all the miles but the silly rule of leaving 2,000 miles balance in account stopped me.

I had enough for a bottle of Jim Beam and bottle of Smirnoff. ;)

Yes, it seems quite silly. I have wondered if it's even illegal.
Also I don't know if there is any other way to redeem your points from UL when you have such a small amount, except for duty free .... which means you need to be flying with them.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A few years ago I remember they had some promotion where for 6,000 miles + fuel surcharge you could book a one-way economy award BKK-CMB. I was planning on going one weekend in between golf but for some reason did not book and before I know it the miles were expiring.

How do you ever use the last 2000 miles??
Account must always have a balance. Not a very appealing frequent flyer program.
