Thanks for the tip but I am well aware how to use youtube and google image search... I asked for AFFers specific experiences, videos and pictures are no match for real world advice.
In late July/ early August, I used UL for SIN - CMB - FRA return in J, booked in early June and priced at $2,061. This was combined with relatively cheap Qantas flights ex Perth and to Sydney, including a points upgrade to new J on QF82. However, a few words and photos on UL, as this is what this thread is about:
A320, SIN - CMB - SIN:
great seats, obviously no lie flat but very generous recline and size in general. Catering acceptable, nothing fancy. Definitely not shy with the alcohol. 10 and 12 seats respectively taken, of 16 in a 2/2 layout.
A330, CMB - FRA - CMB:
I was anxiously anticipating which aircraft would be assigned to "my" flights, as not all seven of their A330-200s have been re-fitted with fully flat, i.e. 180 degrees, seats. According to Flyertalk, five of the seven are and I was lucky to get one on both sectors, regos 4R-ALA and 4R-ALH. These are fitted in a 2/2/2 layout but still plenty of space, and the privacy screen between pairs of seats works well. The newly delivered A330-300s are in a 1/2/1 layout.
I found the bed to be very comfortable, yet slightly on the firm side. Two pillows but a big downer was breakfast being served three hours before landing - on the return sector, I declined breakfast and still got all I wanted an hour before touch-down. Desserts came off trays rather than being plated already. Acceptable quality of food, not fine dining. Rather questionable wines, only one choice of red or white wine, with the red being a South East Australian shiraz - the label looked like a clean skin.
general comments:
no addressing by name and in general, hardly any eye contact but plenty of smiles
once service was done, there seemed to be a "closed curtain policy" but there was a quick response when pushing call button
good selection of entertainment options, with current movies and fairly big screens with good resolution
hot towels, many times
fasten seat belt sign illuminated most of the time but flight attendants don't care, and using the bathroom is also ok
very confusing signage at CMB but great lounge
at CMB airport, arrived at bus stand three of four times with busses taking passengers to the terminal, with a separate bus for J customers
conclusions:
fairly full flights on the A330s, 16 of 18 seats taken in both instances, with 3H and 3K blocked for crew. I was in 1A and 2A respectively, both great seats with a preference for 1A for added privacy
excellent price and slept well, which was my main aim for this trip
unfortunately, it is probably best to overnight in Singapore, otherwise it makes for a very long journey to ensure connecting flights are not missed
would I do this again? I probably would at that price but I would try to get all flights on the one ticket, for protection against delays. Talking of delays, every single flight was early, including arriving into FRA 45 minutes ahead of schedule. Apparently, the new A330-300s are scheduled to go on that route soon, which would make this more attractive again
