Just got an email from UA stating:
Amount of miles required to redeem for certain awards to change.
spacer.gif
Effective 16 October 2006, the number of miles required to redeem for select Standard and Saver Awards will change. As an example, the Australia/New Zealand to North America United Economy Saver Award redemption amount will increase from 60,000 to 80,000 miles, matching most other US carriers' current standard award levels. Even with these changes, Mileage Plus award redemption levels remain among the lowest of international carriers with three classes of service.

Looks like the value of UA miles will decrease by 33% (increase of 20,000mi from 60,000mi).

This change was announced a couple of months ago. Still much better value than QFF or NZ Airpoints.

Air Points has died the death for mine. I was an Airpoints Gold member until they changed to those stupid status credits. That's when I switched to United MP and I've never regretted it. Sure, the cost of freebies is going up, but United's award flights were too cheap to be sustainable. It has put a crimp in some of my plans, but that's what bought miles are for. Plus, United is giving away bonus miles like there's no tomorrow. SYD to anywhere in the US in earning me triple miles until the end of the year (normal, PE bonus, and Silver Anniversary bonus). The good outweighs the bad in my book.

Have to agree with your comments on AirNZ. Doubt I'll ever pay for a ticket with them ever again, as I wouldn't get any miles (I'm UA MM). Seems a tad stupid on their part, but there you go.

As for the extra 20,000 miles to the US, I never fly direct (go via SIN), so it doesn't matter to me. Anyway, I challenge anyone to get a C class MP redemption in the foreseeable future (other than maybe a cancellation or a flight in 2 hours time).
