I've today booked two economy awards on EVA using UA miles flying Japan to Taipei. 8k miles and minimum taxes makes it worthwhile.

I'm trying to confirm exactly what the baggage allowance is and having no luck.

Booking code per EVA website when I manage my flight is X. Doesn't give an allowance.

UA website says first piece is to a max of 35kg.

This 35kg limit corresponds to booking codes B and Y on EVAs website... Which is economy plus?

Does anyone know definitively what applies to EVA awards under UA, when it's not to/from USA? 35kg split across two bags we can manage, so that's what I'm really hoping it is.

From reading the baggage page: Checked Baggage - EVA Air | America it would appear you have a fare class 'other than listed above' (ie you are in 'X') so I'd assume it is 30kg. You might be lucky and have 35 as per your ticket receipt. I suspect either will be fine (if you can point to your e-ticket where it says 35 I doubt BR is going to kick back).

(the link title is slightly misleading - part way down the page it covers itineraries other than USA)

I did read that page multiple times, but didn't read it like you've interpreted Mel. I think you're right in saying 30kg.

The information I have received from United makes it ambiguous enough - 1st bag @ $0, 2nd bag N/A, weight per bag 77lbs (35kg). I might try and give United and Eva a call at some point. 35kgs across two bags, I can manage. 30kg is tight with diving & camera gear and clothing for the trip!

Called EVA (Operating Airline) - they said as UA ticketed the flight, I have to speak with UA regarding baggage allowance.

Called UA (Ticketing Airline) - they said as its EVA operating the flight, they are the ones who will set the rules for baggage and to call them.

If it wasnt $15 USD per kilo for excess baggage, I'd be a little more relaxed on it.

I think the most accurate answer has been 30KG per MEL's post unless there is another way to confirm?

In theory, your e-ticket should set out your baggage allowance. If UA’s e-ticket says 35, you should be ok (at worst you can take a couple of kilos out and take it as hang luggage?)

I've tried using checkmytrip (Amadeus) to confirm baggage like it does for some tickets, nothing shows. Is there another way to use the eticket number/booking reference?

The email itinerary that lists the eticket number is silent on baggage. The only reference I have from UA is as per the attached when I look at the booking on united.com. It doesnt fill me with confidence of being definitely 35kg.

Re-positioning items between checked and carry on works if you arent at the limit of both. In all likelihood for this trip, with Mrs tizey having shopped hard in Japan as always, and me carrying scuba + underwater camera gear, checked baggage and carry on are going to be maxed out, in all likelihood to within a matter of grams. We'll make whatever limit we have work as we have 40kg each back to AU and on the remainder of the trip, but this is the only uncertain flight we have.

So I tried to work this out again, having not looked at it for a few days.

I tried booking a Revenue ticket on the same flight via UA - it books it into booking code Y on united.com (which on EVA's website gives 35kg limit) - and shows the same information regarding baggage as my booking does of 35kg per person.

I think given the above, and that I have now found an itinerary of my trip that shows 35kg baggage allowance for my booking, I'll run with the 35kg limit.

Edit: futhermore, I have no issue with accepting the 40kg limit on China Airlines that I've booked through Qantas on my Qantas ticket, so I should be fine with this. Will report back in a few months time.

EVA check in staff said 30kg each until I showed them the baggage allowance as shown in the United app being 35kg. Then they were ok with it once they saw it for both of us.

Very strange though - they were very, very strict on 7kg max for carry on baggage, requiring some last minute shifting around of our two small carry on cases that I'd mucked up and had set at 8kg. Interesting though that they saw my camera backpack (quite big) and didn't ask a question about that - currently sitting at 10kg. Thank god they didn't weigh it.

The other oddity with presenting the United itinerary was with ANA domestic in Japan. Somehow it allowed us to have 2x23kg on all internal domestic flights, despite it saying 20kg only. I think they may have confused it at check-in with international allowances. Either way, very happy as dodged excess baggage the whole way!
