UA captain suffers fatal heart attack

Trained for it yes to compartmentalise events, but the pressure to do it after seeing a pilot you might have known for years dragged dying from his seat couldn't have been easy.

Poor bugger, poor family and workmates.

I hope he gets a decent amount of time off & PTSD counselling if needed.

At least the network that showed the report had the sense to get a quote from John Nance who will be a familiar face to those who watch the Air Crash Investigation series who stated that either pilot is qualified to takeover and land.

We make think, "well, duh no kidding" however I'm sure there are people out there who believe that only the Captain can land the plane & somehow the F/O is just along for the ride which isn't help by hysterical media reports.

Tragic that despite everyone's best efforts that the Captain died.

The media seldom portrays the flight deck as a 'team' - always praises the captain only. Look at Sully Sullenberger and Richard de Crispigny to name but two.

I don't know why they think that the FO cannot fly the aircraft to the same standard as the captain. Different level of responsibility, yes; different flying ability, generally not.

Try telling a senior FO at QANTAS/Cathay/Emirates that they are just along for the ride...
