Hey Guys,

I've got a work trip to Singapore coming up. Will probably be economy and most likely a saver fare so can't upgrade.

I was thinking about just booking a rewards seat in Business or First for myself instead and not using the economy seat.

Assume it isn't an issue to have two seats on the same flight in the same name?

Also, will I be able to earn points + status credits for the unused economy seat or any trick around it so I can earn them?

Thanks!

It will most likely be an issue to hold two seats on the same flight and the airline will most likely contact you to ask which one you want (and cancel the other).

The danger will be that they cancel one seat without asking you first. If that's the reward seat you might not get it back (if it doesn't return to inventory).

Even if you did manage to hold two seats, you would not earn points. At the time the flight closes the unchecked-in seat would register as a 'no-show', ineligible to earn points. The return (if there is one) would also be cancelled at the same time.

The exception to the number of seats will be if you have specifically organised with the airline for two seats for a special purpose... passenger of size or additional luggage. The two seats will be in the same booking and must be ticketed specially.

Thanks for the info, it's the return flight that I'm interested in changing.

Anyone got any experience with this sort of situation? Really don't want to be stuck in economy on a red eye.

You can book the return as an award seat and cancel the economy class (do this after arriving in Singapore). Having a cancelled booking in another class is fine.

if you make the award booking to get home before flying the outbound (and therefore have two seats for the flight home for a period of time), it is possible SQ will call you to ask your intentions.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

(a) not sure if SQ awards points and SCs for multiple seats - most airlines have rules against this, (b) one of your seats would autocancel as soon as they close the flight. You won't be able to scan both boarding passes at the gate, so whichever one you don't scan gets cancelled. If you scanned the economy one, your seat in business won't be available to you as you won't be on the manifest. If you scan the business one, the economy one gets cancelled and therefore no points.
