Noticed on my trip this week two odd things that I dont have an answer for:

1. What the heck is the worm like black lines on the concrete taxiway at BNE, they run up to a meter, are an inch wide and look like the work of my two year old son, and there is 100's if not 1000's of them, all located near the edge of the taxiway in shapes that are not skid marks?

2. Why does TSV have an airport light beacon mounted on its own mast in the car park rather than have on on the more traditional top of tower position?

Any takers?

Letme have a crack at one.

Sounds like concrete repair putty stuff. They will follow the crack pattern, it is not art!

There are a lot of crack pots on Brisbane :p

*rim shot*

On a more serious note (oh wait, he was being serious about the powers that be running BNE airport, do'h! :p)

Don't forget most of BNE airport, was built on marsh land. Having sat in on a presentation given by an engineer who used to work heavily with BNE airport projects (and other airport projects), the long term maintenance required to keep BNE airport in good shape plus accommodate expansions is not insignificant.

P.S. I know there are crack pots in Brisbane, but what does it mean if they are on Brisbane? You're not implying that our fair city is, or shares the name with, something that makes you high? *floodgates officially open*

I've sent the question to a friend in Townsville who runs an airfield survey company.

To answer your question, the old control tower was on the corner of the old 10SQN hangar just down from the old Officer’s Mess. The ABN used to be on the roof. When the tower was in the process of being relocated the ABN was moved to a location just outside the civil operations building (which was also near the original NDB) as it was maintained by the then DCA and their techs were also located in the ops building (ease of access – lazy!!). When the tower was completed (a defence asset), and because the ABN was a civil asset, the decision was made to leave it where it is currently located. There is no doubt that it would be more visible to aircraft in flight if it were located on the current control tower which as you know is basically located in the middle of the swamp (few surrounding lights).
Hope that helps.
