I'm planning ahead for a trip to SthAm next year. In order to get a feel for indicative prices, I started a dummy booking MEl-SCL out ~~8/10, in ~28/10, checked flexible with dates and selected the cheapest flight flagged.

For one adult, result ($3200) as follows:

Oops, forgot to include Mrs C!. Modify search change one adult to two, NO OTHER changes and again select / accept booking engine's selections.
Price is now $2800+ more than booking one adult twice (same flights but couldn't select sale over saver):

Repeated this on ipad as well as laptop in private browsing mode.

What is happening???

It is possible that only one fare is available in the cheapest fare bucket, and then when you select two seats you get one of the next most expensive fares.

The first fare quote is for a PE sale fare both directions however the second fare quote is for a PE Saver fare outbound and a PE Sale fare inbound so the fares are not identical.

Return fares are same "PE sale" fare, but $500 difference.
