Turkish Airlines Australian Services

Fabulous to get another Star Alliance option to Europe. Pity its via SIN initially, but all in good time.

But then you’ll miss the premium pricing and low cost carrier experience of QF 35/36! And if TK’s new service slightly eats into QF’s exorbitant profit margins, how on earth will Alan Joyce survive when his farewell fat cat bonus pulls up just short to accommodate a second super yacht mooring at his Sydney Harbourside mansion? That’s just un-Australian of you, Roo.

I'm not sure they'd necessarily have the financial capability to do it, it's a big commitment and the Turkish Lira is (due to self inflicted stupidity) increasingly struggling in foreign currency markets and inflation in Turkey is estimated at ~50% per annum. It's fair to assume the market would be Australian tourists going to Europe or north Africa, and European tourists to Australia. Not that many of either right now, or for the foreseeable...

It would have to be Sydney to be worth doing at all, they are in Star Alliance and there are plenty of Star carriers operating in to Sydney already. Including SQ under a codeshare with TK.

TK appears to have a strong preference for MEL.

There's no suggestion it lacks the financial capability, provided it achieves the fifth freedom rights Oz-SIN-Oz. See previous post above.

Does anyone know which airline alliance has the most seats into AU? Im wondering if Star is already the largest or if TK flights will push it to the top?

I think it depends if you want to count all the QF short-haul international flights to SEA and Pacific. If you exclude those, I would wager it would be star - carried mostly by SIA, then ANA and ANZ.

Turkish was approved for 21 weekly flights.
Qatar already has 28.
We have no idea what Turkish has or will be approved for. This is a huge misunderstanding of the whole process. Australia don't approve anything in this regard. Turkey and Australia - as countries - have agreed to increase the bilateral capacity available to both countries from 7 to 21 weekly with immediate effect, and then to 28 and 35 weekly from the end of October 2024 and 2025, respectively. Given that there are currently no flights, this is a substantial increase.

Turkey will inevitably award these to Turkish Airlines when they apply for them. At no time have Turkish Airlines applied to the Australian authorities for an expansion of capacity.

I wonder if that anonymous blog might have some Geoffrey Thomas fingerprints on it? 😉
No idea who this is. I had to google him.

The website below has a nice summary of the international passengers by major airlines

Not sure about the number of seats but it shows passenger numbers which is closely correlated. ANA isn't even listed in the graph so it has under 3% of total passengers into AU.

I think oneworld has more seats even excluding the QF short-haul flights, with QR (4.4%), MH (3.3%) and CX (3%) contributing to it.

That is quite a chunk in capacity, enables them to become bigger in capacity vs QR.

I thought I read they had issues getting the required aircraft to service the route nonstop. However this will become a new way to Europe and beyond, with hopefully daily direct frequencies from MEL/SYD/PER/BNE

QF won’t be happy! Going to cost them passengers and profits!

in the interim (until the new aircraft come online) the plan is to serve the route via SIN, hence the importance of fifth freedoms.

The new longer range jets will obviously have a pretty solid product on board. Some of the current fleet is a bit random and average.

Looking forward later this decade to enter a new era of long haul. QF sunrise, TK launching non stops with new aircraft, Riyadh Air is another newbie to watch.

Some mention here…(lost in amongst some vblogger getting banned).

Meanwhile, any new entrant via a new/different hub ought to have some impact on international fares moving forward. But there probably won’t be any rhyme or reason why specific city pairs are better than others….

Edit: Oh, also discussion in this otherwise negatively titled thread…
