Hi guys,

I'm looking at booking a trip to New Zealand and want to book the domestic flights with Air New Zealand, I've tried various routes with seat, seat +bag, smart saver and fully flex. can't seem to get any fares at all that book into the eligible Y, B, Q, H or M classes, most seem instead tend to be S, V, P etc. Are there actually any fares with Air New Zealand domestically that earn you points with Virgin as I can't seem find any. If there aren't does that also mean status credits won't be earned? Also just seeking clarification seems airpoints Gold seat only doesn't get an additional bag, what about Velocity Gold?

Thanks.

I did Wellington to Westport and back a couple of times and Auckland to Nelson and back half a dozen or more times last year. I booked into all of V, T, G , S, and L classes on these flights, even though all of them were 'cheapest flight of the day', as per our company policy, and they all looked the same from the ANZ website.

You'll notice that none of these is Y, B, Q, H or M, which are supposedly the only points-earning classes, but on my first AKL -> NSN flight I did earn full economy points and SCs. All other flights I earned nothing, which is what would be expected from the Virgin website. I suspect I somehow got lucky on the one V-class flight on which I earned points.

Does ExpertFlyer show fare classes for AKL -> NSN, or any other Air NZ domestic flights?

Even though I missed out on points and SCs (and won't be able to get to SG again this year because of it), I was reasonably impressed with the ANZ domestic lounges, to which my VA SG gave me access. Some were a bit shabby, but the lovely NZ Sauvignon Blancs were always a treat, and the larger lounges had good food, too.

So, sorry, a roundabout answer: from my experience, I suspect many flights may not even have seats available in those fare classes.

Is it really worth buying an Y, B, Q, H or M fare just to get VA Points? your looking at paying $400 oneway AKL-WLG for a Y class fare.

Flew AKL-CHC-AKL at Easter on the cheapest fare (that included checked luggage) that I could find. Earned no points/SCs, but VA Platinum status enabled me to have unfettered seat selection (on a fare that did not give seat selection), and lounge access for me and my two travelling companions.

Not sure if booking in a more expensive class just for points/SCs is worth it, and sorry I cannot answer your question. I just enjoyed the the VA perks. :)

NZ have to be one of THE MOST stingy airline for earning points with any partner. you need to pay an absolute fortune to get mileage earning with partner programs, on all of their routes.
