Does anyone know if during the TRS process, the officers check the serial numbers? I was looking to TRS a macbook but wanted to apply a skin to the underside which would cover the serial number. I know you can log into the OS to view the serial number but it's a gift and I didn't want to set it up ahead of time.

Not in my experience.

I have had this checked once years ago with a Macbook Pro. I think it depends on the officer, my experience varies greatly each time I go through, sometimes they're very thorough (and even query if I'm bringing the item back, my residency status, return dates etc) but other times they haven't even got me to open the box to show the item is in there! Probably depends on value and other factors like how long the queue is.

On two phones they've wanted the IMEI number (phone serial number for all intents and purposes).

Just take a picture prior perhaps?

Was that departing PER?

You guys have had thorough TRS agents! Mine have either 1/ not even looked up or 2/ given the most brief glance at the proffered item.

Generally the case although in one single instance I had a woman at MEL who told me I would be taxed on the way back on my new iPhone I claimed and to be sure to declare on the way back. On the way back the reaction was “nah, all good” and waived me through.
