QF baggage rules don't specifically comment about camera tripods and I have previously had no probs taking a small one in hand luggage but does anyone know if a 40cm tripod would be permitted in hand luggage?

Probably depends on the mood of the security guard at the time. One could argue that it'd make quite an effective weapon on a plane...

Many things would though, including plastic cutlery, but I wouldn't point that out if stopped! :p

Agree -my conundrum was exactly those points. I note that QF do state that tennis rackets etc are allowed in HL and they'd make pretty good weapons too.

I have travelled heaps both for work and for leisure with a tripod in hand luggage.

The work tripod is about 50cm collapsed, not that light, and is stored in a roller pelican case that I usually take onboard (often have to leave at the steps on ATRs etc). Also in the pelican case is a sound level meter (expensive) that I usually have to turn on for security, a small screw driver and a couple of computer cables and about 8-12 c-cell batteries. Until recently I had to put the batteries in checked bags. Now they must go as carry on.

The leisure tripod is actually used for a camera. It is lightweight, about 35cm collapsed and fits in a camera backpack, which comes on as hand luggage every time.

I have never had an issue domestically or internationally.

WRT it being a weapon, I don't think the security scanners give a stuff. I once did a return flight with a tent peg in the bottom of the pelican case.

Not to mention airside lounges also don't tend to use plastic cutlery even (nor does J)
