Trip (insurance) report: CBA medical

Inspired by a recent post about an experience claiming travel insurance, figured I'd put my 2c in here about my experience claiming under Commonwealth bank credit card insurance.

In September I had a 3 week trip to Europe for 2 conferences with some holidays between and at either end (good luck I say to my accountant to figure out how much of the trip is tax deductible haha!).

In the between part, developed stomach pain during a 90 minute flight into Belgrade. Worsened to the point mr k_sheep summoned the FA and we decided to be met by medical staff on arrival. Medicos came on and ushered me into ambulance. Off to the local government hospital where I suspect I looked a bit like a drug seeker - my observations and bloods were all normal. I actually self discharged because I could see what was happening and I was desperate for some paracetamol (they told me they had given me pain relief - but it was just omeprazole - it's handy being medical myself).

Paracetamol made it bearable overnight but I quickly realised I would max out my dose by 11am and wouldn't be able to deal. Phoned travel insurance at 7am local time asking for advice; they didn't have a list of recommended hospitals in Belgrade but the paramedic I spoke to said they would ask their contacts who they would recommend and email me (since I don't have roaming on my phone - I used skype to call). They also said just phone an ambulance if you need. No email back by 10 so I just googled and went to a private hospital based on the UK gov recommendations.

Rock up at 11am asking where emergency was - they didn't actually have emergency department but saw I was a bit distressed to actually managed to get a surgeon to see me in outpatients almost immediately. Imaging done, into emergency surgery for dead gallbladder and small bowel obstruction and next thing I knew it was 5pm in a private hospital room. Emailed insurance to say I'd ended up here - they said good, that was one that they were actually going to recommend. Hospital didn't accept travel insurance so we just paid and figured we'd claim back later.

I did the travel insurance claim once I got back home (kept my original flights because it was recommended not to travel long haul for about 10 days, which lined up close enough). They paid within I think 10 days, zero questions asked. They paid
- hospital bill
- pharmac_ bills after (which included antibiotics and pain relief, I even bought more paracetamol about a week later and they paid that too)
- 3 nights hotel for mr k_sheep while I was still in hospital (expensive at last minute!)
- our cancelled train trip from Belgrade
- our replacement flight from Belgrade to Dubrovnik
- my conference fee which I missed (ended up being close to $2k AUD)

No clarification or anything required, though I did have to sign a release for my GP to release my medical records. I should have included all my 80c tram tickets I used to get to and from hospitals lol, along with the (highly expensive) taxis my travel companions had to get from airport to hospital then back to hotels - I thought they would be way more picky. Had to pay the $500 excess for cancellation (for the conference) but no excess for the medical stuff.

Wholeheartedly recommend. I thought there would be way more arguments and stuff and they would argue I saw my GP for stomach pain 5 years ago or something so it was pre-existing ... but nothing.
 
Thanks for putting that together. You only know how good a travel insurance provider is, when you go to claim.

I have the CBA Ultimate Awards card and have been tossing up whether to drop it. But given we will be doing more international travel in 2025 and 2026 it maybe worth keeping just for the travel insurance. Currently, what I save on exchange fees is covering the monthly fee - just.
 
Thanks for posting, good to hear a positive experience as this card is my keeper along with amex Explorer.

I recently had my first trip in a nee naw to hospital in the UK due to appendicitis. No charge except approx 20 pounds for TTO meds, didn't bother claiming. Didn't need to change flights or accommodation, timing just worked out well which was the one silver lining (and the 3 kilos i lost 😂)

Clearly I spend too much day to day because I haven't paid the monthly fee yet :p I figured even a few months' of the $35 fee is still cheaper with the forex saving.
 
I had a similar good experience with credit card insurance but I'd also taken out separate TI insurance. I had a jugular DVT three months before travel to Alaska plus a land tour. The TI said they would cover me if I had an emergency issue in Alaska in their remote areas. We did not want to risk that. This meant they would not pay on cancellation as it would be considered as 'change of mind'. So we turned to credit card insurance as 'an unexpected medical issue arising within a few months of travel. Can't remember the number of months. So we submitted the claim through CC insurance as it was not a pre existing health issue. They paid very quickly.
 
Back in 2009, # leg, 3 weeks prior to a booked trip to Venice,Italy, involving a medical conference, then planned to train to Rome to meet husband and have holiday. Used Commbank CC insurance, they were using Zurich as underwriters at that time. Once all paperwork completed, went through quickly and smoothly, $$ in bank in 3 days with no problems.
We haven’t used any other form of insurance for yrs, and I have pre-existing med issues which I declare. Saved a fortune!
 
I’m reviving this thread to mention a good experience with my credit card travel insurance (Allianz through Westpac Altitude Black) today. On a recent trip to South America, I came down with a nasty bout of gastro. I had to see a doctor, take some medications and miss out on a few days of my package tour, staying in bed in my hotel. The doctor’s bill was just over the excess and I didn’t really expect that they’d pay for the missed days of the tour so I almost didn’t bother doing the paperwork for the claim, but they came through and paid in full for the doctor, medications, and missed % of the tour within a day of submitting the claim.
 
Another positive vote for the Westpac Black.
Hardest bit was figuring out where to put what in the website.

My mother got a bad dose of the Bus Flu on a recent tour, we had to drop out, she got well enough after some pills and rest and we rejoined the tour at a later point, skipping a few days in the middle, and got the last couple of tour days and our prebooked flights home.
They paid for all expenses involving medical, hotels and rebooking flights etc, even asked why we had not claimed the missed tour parts, so we did, even though we were not real concerned about this. We were reasonable, didnt put every single cup of coffee in and I even used my points for one night of accom at no charge to them.
The only hurdle was I was neither a spouse or a dependent, if anything she was dependent on me after she got sick, so it was easier for them to do it all on one claim (mums) anyway. I was not sick and have the same card as her so it would be same cost but double paperwork.
Mum reckons she was glad it me with her not Dad, as he would never have been able to rebook hotels and flights etc on his phone like I did.
