Hi all

Fairly new to this and just thought I would share our recent trip experience to Switzerland and Israel on a Swiss air ticket - 2 adults and 2 teenages
I am qantas club member

Adults got mixed business and economy - approx 4.5K
Kids just economy approx 2.5K

All flights were on Airbus I recall

Fist leg: sydney to Singapore: daytime, all in economy on BA. Interestingly only got about 900 qantas FF for this leg. BA Checkin lady said we could get access to lounge but no luck when we actually got to lounge.
Managed to get whole family into lounge in Singapore - average lounge (cant remember exactly which one)
Second leg: adults business on swiss, kids in economy, overnight to zurich. Swiss business service, food average at best but the lie flat beds are fine which is all one really wants.
Third leg: economy zurich to tel aviv - fine
Back: TA to Zurich - adults in business, No ways would they let kids into Dan lounge at Ben gourion - it was next to useless anyway. Food terrible.
Zurich to singapore: adults business again. Struggled to get kids into Swiss lounge in Zurich but remembered I and my wife had diners clubs and managed somehow to get them in as it was also a diners club lounge. But it was a bit of a fight.
Singapore to Sydney - qantas, all economy - for some reason got 3000 points for this leg compared to 900 on BA for reverse. Qantas economy is a squeeze but OK, food average. Qantas lounge in Singapore accepted whole family easily and nicely with qantas club membership of mine and it is really a magnificent lounge, food great showers etc. It really will prompt me to book qantas again.

All in all a great trip: Swiss air business is definitely no-frills but the bed is all I really want

I suspect the checkin agent gave you the wrong information. As you were traveling in economy, that has no lounge entitlement, and as you were flying with BA, your Qantas club membership wont help. Your points earn rate will be as per the table on the QF site for traveling on BA as a Oneworld partner. Looks like its a fraction of what Qantas would give you.

This time, as you were traveling on Qantas, and a Qantas club member, you are entitled to bring in one guest, and the kids don't count towards that guest count. The 3000 points is the actual mileage and as you were traveling on Qantas you get the full mileage.

That's interesting you say about how LX J is 'definitely no frills' - I would have thought it would be one of the best 'second-tier' (i.e. non 5-star airlines). I don't hear many complaints about them ever. I would expect them to be better than TG and MH and they are definitely not 'no frills'!
