Has anyone stayed in any of these places and any suggestions for things I must see. Also thinking about how much time I need to spend there.

I've had a look at some of the TR from that region but happy for any further info

Ljubljana as you've probably read is a lovely city as is the rest of Slovenia. Recommend the old town to stay and also driving around Slovenia if possible. It can be done as a series of day trips if you hire a car. Can't remember the name of the hotel. Trieste is one of those places where you need to keep clear of the town hall clock if you like sleeping. We preferred places further South but it probably depends on the itinerary.

Only visited Trieste and Padua on a cruise excursion. Would go back to both. I was able to do an extended walk after my excursion and it was very enjoyable. Also had a very nice lunch in Trieste.
Padua unfortunately had terrible weather but so much history and beautiful buildings I would love to go back.
Slovenia was beautiful. We stopped at the port of Piran a lovely walkable fishing port with an impressive Cathedral above the city.
Our excursion was to a mountain village with very hospitable residents who made very good wine and grappa as well as pork products. I would love to go back and drive around Slovenia.

Trieste, Padua and Vicenza are great to visit. Never been to Ljubljana. For Vicenza google Palladian, theatre, assorted buildings are fab. Scrovegni Chapel In Padua is not to be missed, book ahead. Trieste has great harbour, restaurants, canals, Castello Miramare. Museo Storico e Il Parco del Castello di Miramare

Stay in centre of Vicenza and go to Palladian built Basilica Palladiana - Wikipedia
for sunset drinks. Vicenza residents are known as Mangia gatti:) Why is it said that cats were eaten in Vicenza?

Would you stay in Vicenza rather than Padua?

Can't say really. Only stayed in Vicenza not Padua. We spent a lot of time visiting Palladian buildings etc in and around Vicenze so it was the best choice for us. We trained it to Padua.

Also have a look at the Brenta Canal boats if you are in the area.
