I don't know if most people are aware of this, but Travelzoo recently started a free weekly email newsletter advising of travel deals of interest to people in Australia. You can view / sign-up for it at Travel Deals: Airfare, Holiday Packages, Hotels, and More | Travelzoo.

I only mention this because I received their latest newsletter this morning and it mentioned that Countrylink (I know, it's not an airline) is having a Mothers Day sale (10-11 May), where all fares are $30 one-way, including first class.

I thought this was a good deal, so I have just booked 2 first class seats CBR-MEL-CBR on the XPT for May 10-11. Should be an interesting weekend, but I have travelled the XPT before (it's slow!) so hopefully not too many surprises.

Others might be interested in this offer, which applies to anywhere in the Countrylink network, eg SYD-BNE, CBR-BNE, etc, etc...

$30 Brisbane - Sydney (First Class) or Vice Versa is quite a good deal. Not so good is the ~14 hours travelling time each way. Bring a book :)

A few years ago, my 2 sisters from overseas visited me and they decided to go to Melbourne from Sydney to visit our cousins. So, we flew from SYD to MEL, but my sisters insisted to travel by train on the way back because they said they wanted to see the country side. NEVER again! :( Fourteen hours on the train - I was ready to jump off the train literally. I said next time I would fly back and they could take the train. The journey was so long and tiring. At the time, the cost of flying and taking the train was the same - in fact it was slightly cheaper flying!
