Has anyone travelled internationally or will be with active Stage IV cancer and managed to get an insurance policy? I think it may be Covermore or something similar and they will probably not cover you for the cancer related part . However I know some countries have reciprocal arrangements with Medicare so if I am in one of those countries I assume (and if someone can enlighten me) I will be covered there should something flare up. I am currently still undergoing treatment, but at this stage only have it monthly so have a few weeks inbetween. More interested in if I break a leg (PLEASE NO), covid or something like that.....

Were you covered for everything else and which insurer? I used to have annual Travelmore cover which suited me fine but that was two years ago.

Sorry to hear that maia :(

The usual situation is that if you don't - or cannot - get cover for pre-existing conditions then it is only those (and related/caused by) events that are excluded from the policy.

Always check the PDS and call the insurer to make sure, but generally anything that is unrelated to your pre-existing condition will still be covered. But also check general exclusions... the policy may exclude any cover if travelling against a doctor's advice for example.

Ok that makes sense and no I haven't spoken to any of my oncologists about it it's just something on my bucket list.😁. Have you used any of the reciprocal Medicare in London or some of Europe? Wondered what the experience was?

I haven’t. (touch wood)

From the website it sounds like you’re covered for urgent care, as suggested by coriander’s post.

Sorry to hear your health situation Maia. 😔.

I have some health conditions that meant one large company would not cover me at all for. Not just the pre-existing, but they would not cover me at all for a USA trip.

However NIB Travel Insurance have covered me for 2 trips, including my Pre-Existing conditions for an additional fee that was still reasonable considering it is the USA. Maybe you can do a quote with them and see if they will cover you.

I hope this helps.
Take care.
Paul

Thank you:)

Hi Maia, I managed the travel of someone very close and dear to me with this set of circumstances. I would call covermore. We went with normal paid travel insurance and I probably would not do this again, but going back in time I would have changed many things.

All the best

What would you not do again and what would you do differently?

From my own perspective I would:

1. Speak with a insurer who has a track record in insuring more complex medical histories and use them (we had lots going on, so we didn't do this). Could ring cancer council or places like Solaris Cancer Care to see what advice they have.
2. I would not do what i did which was rely on a paid insurance policy, knowing that the person involved would not be insured for anything cancer related. This placed a huge amount of stress on me due to the possibility of being hospitalized and ending up with a very large bill.
3. I would have travelled more with this person to make the best use of the time.

You have given me really good advice and yes I will contact cancer council and see if they have more information. I am really sorry you did not get to travel more with your special person. I have to say that whilst we have travel dreams we do not always have the energy we think we have...I have the plans and the will....but often just the thought of a long distance flight has me exhausted. Apart from that thank you for your honest reply.⭐

Update...spoke to cancer council and they had no information. Their recommended supplier only does domestic and nothing else (I called and spoke to them and then told cancer council). Called TID whose sales person assured me that a domestic cruise I would be able to claim via Medicare and make local calls to their call centre - unfortunately I had to educate them on international waters etc. so that did not work either . Have called covermore 4 times and left messages, my number and emailed them.....still waiting. Lucky no hurry to go on an international flight However definitely no pre-existing conditions covered which I have accepted and will probably just take the insurance for everything else and hold thumbs - including the domestic cruise I have booked in June. I also looked at the terms and conditions of my Qantas Plat cc and same sort of thing. I normally buy other insurance as well so will do that just to be covered for the other stuff.

Have you tried Insure and Go?
