Travelling on Virgin Atlantic from MEL to Hong Kong. Family of 5, economy seats bought with points (thanks Award Flight Assist). Likely I’ll have Pilot Gold Velocity status.

Depart from MEL on my birthday.

Question: is it worth asking at check-in for some sort of perk? Anyone ever received anything in similar circumstances?

If you are hinting for an upgrade at check in due it being your birthday, don’t be disappointed when the answer is no.

Crew on board may have a card that they may sign for you, but it’s hard to say

Presumably the name of the airline is a typo. I think you will be flying Virgin Australia, not Virgin Atlantic.
It has been known for people to receive some acknowledgement for their birthday on airlines such as a drink of champagne, a card, or some form of birthday cake. However I think it unlikely this would be initiated from a conversation at check in.
In addition travelling in economy, as 5 passengers, presumably without status, may make recognition less possible.
By all means try for some perk, but I can't see what perk would make any difference.

I've seen people get Happy Birthday written as a remark on the BP. I doubt you could expect much more than that. Highly unlikely you'd be the only person on the plane having a birthday. If it was me I wouldn't ask for anything.

Sq will give you a birthday cake if prerequsted. Not sure if for all cabins as I was in F when I got it ;)

If you talk to VA before flying, preferably someone else on behalf of you I would think, then you could get something like this.. (posted on Instagram, publicly)

Some airlines will go above and beyond with full cake, dimming the cabin lights and crew singing happy birthday. Had that experience on EK and SQ. Other airlines will offer hand written notes, got one on CX.

Recently flown QF on my bday, no recognition but it was short domestic J flight . Hope VA will do better for you.

Ive never got anything for flying on my Birthday on mainstream flight, but as i am usually away for it, i did score front (co-pilot) seat on joy flight over Fraser Island and also on sea plane flight from Broome to Horizontal falls - best seat on both planes because it was my Birthday.

MrP flew Qantas on his birthday, well, we left late the night before from NYC and with date changes he actually didn't have a "land" birthday at all. He now reckons he's younger than me. Needless to say, nada from Qantas.

I don't recall that my birthday has ever been acknowledged by cabin crew and I wouldn't ask for anything nor expect anything special.
