Where in the world have you been to see a music performance - and would you go again?

Mrs Excel was given tickets to WASO's production of Strauss's Zarathustra last night, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am a classical music novice, and as such have never considered any of the world's older orchestras or venues, but am now considering making it a part of our next journey.

Does anyone have stories of symphonies, music halls or groups they loved (or hated)?

The cat family saw Cecilia Bartoli singing the role of Cinderella in Zürich a couple of years ago. She was fantastic.
On the other hand we saw Yo-Yo Ma at the Royal Albert Hall and it was really disappointing - a modern atonal piece that was just terrible.
More recently we saw Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga singing at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. He is amazing but she doesn't quite carry it off.
We do tend to look for performances when overseas, usually classical but our taste is eclectic.

Bolshoi in Moscow. ..actually we went to Moscow for a holiday, and took my mum to an opera at the Bolshoi.

Yes, over the past few years, I've travelled to India and Mexico, specifically for music, with a touring orchestra. Have also visited Prague, Paris, London, Oxford, NYC, Washington, Glimmerglass and numerous other places for particular orchestral, opera and ballet performances.

Added to that, one of the first things I check in any place we visit is the listings for concerts and other performances, so we've had some brilliant experiences in many parts of the world, from Beijing to Budapest and all parts in between.

To answer your question:
I can't think of many - any? - I've hated but there have been countless delights. The night of the reopening of the Buenos Aires Opera after many years of refurbishment was a highlight. That was completely by chance - and we wound up with a Box to ourselves for totally unfathomable reasons.

Among other memorable visits, the Opera House in Muscat, Oman, was fascinating, and - in terms of value for money, our five dollar seats for the jewel box that is the Budapest Opera House must rank up there with the best.

Thanks for raking up the memories with your question. :)

Saw Radiohead at the Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence in July 2003. A mate and I had planned the Italian leg of our six week trip around it. Had tickets for the second night but also managed to get in for the first night as well.
The memories have dimmed somewhat now but I do recall it being a pretty remarkable experience.

More recently, and much less logistically challenging, a quick jaunt to Adelaide to see Sara Bareilles with the missus a few weeks before our wedding was a nice trip.

Does going to the Moulin Rouge count? Probably not ;)

I usually prefer (cool jazz) thru my headphones when im on the plane and songs that are related to (chevy chase christmas lampoon vacacion) by the comedy family movie theme songs they have. Its rather intruiging and relaxation. But jazz is good. Helps me to relax otherwise. And also listen to the news when im on the plane but it be nice to hear some more variety jazz and some of that from that comedy movie of (lampoon vacations) if you seen the movie you would know exactly what im on about with the songs they have on that movie during and after credits.

Last year I went to Japan specifically to see Paul McCartney.....first time there for me.

Music related: 2014 I was invited to go inside Studio 2 at Abbey Road for a tour a discussion on The Beatles' recording techniques etc. Got to hear some studio outtakes not available to the public - that was pretty special.

Have travelled round Australia for concerts but not specifically overseas. Our main reason for visiting Dublin a few years back though was for James Joyce sites.

Saw Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden last year, fantastic show and atmosphere! (I will quietly mention that I also saw Britney at Planet Hollywood in Vegas and enjoyed every minute of it!)
