What would be an excellent place to buy travel-sized cosmetics and hygiene products, please? I'm looking at Sydney but others might appreciate suggestions in other locations.

For shaving cream, I have used this 75 g tube. The other option has been the tiny ones you get from lounges which usually last for 1-3 times only (and don't particularly feel like good stuff, either). I'd love to find a 30 g (or so) tube.

Chemist Warehouse and supermarkets have some variety (though shaving cream is well neglected). Are there better places around?

The toothbrush is just for scale. With toothbrushes, a normal sized is a good one.

Big W and Targert from my experience. You can also contact the manufacturer, asking if they have samples and when I make purchases on Chemist Warehouse ect, I always look for sample offerings. Same with face care/beauty products.

My dentist has a bowl of tiny toothpaste and mouth wash 🤣

Have you had a look on Amazon, there's a range of travel-sized shaving creams there. Everything else I used to get at Coles or Woolies (mouthwash, sunscreen, moisturiser, toothpaste...).

Or alternatively you can buy lots of 100 ml sized empty bottles at Kmart chemist warehouse etc and make your own.
I do this for things I can't get in small sizes as well.

Thanks everyone for great suggestions. I nearly never visit BigW / KMart / Target so didn't even think of them. Perhaps I need to find my nearest ones and see what they have.

After being a liquid soap person for eons, I have recently ventured into soap bars for body wash. @flyingsal's suggestion about solid toiletries sounds worth checking out. Alternatively, refillable tubes might be the way to go (I try to keep items that can spoil in original or clean / sterile containers but there will be way to keep this going, if needed).

A good source of soap bars used to be hotels, but most are now using liquid detergent, which is what it really is. I just use soap for shaving.

Just be aware that items labelled as "Travel" size can be extremely expensive on unit rate basis. Just compare the cost/unit of a "travel" toothpaste, versus the cost for a 100g sized equivalent.

My tips are
  • Always get a toothpaste sample when I visit the dentist, they are good for at least 2 weeks holiday.
  • Travel with a small shaving brush, I use this with the hotel bar soap, or squirt some of the liquid soap in my palm, either way gives me an acceptable amount of foam.
On a similar vein I usually wash my socks and jocks using the hotel shampoo rather than try to take laundry detergent with me.

All good travel advice. Thanks.
I have successfully refilled those giveaway tubes of toothpaste. Not too difficult or messy if you take care. Any " $2" shop, found in most malls, sells 100 ml bottles.

you can get two weeks out of one of those small toothpastes - wow - I get about 5 days

Check out eBay where sellers offer new and unused amenity kits from all the major airlines including Qantas, Emirates, Singapore Airlines etc. The amenity kits are generally first or business class and they're happy to post to your front door, no matter where you live in the world.

instead of shaving cream I use conditioner, easier to find in small carry-on size or to refill hotel sized bottles at a pinch - it might sound out there, but IMO silicone lube or shaving oil is better for a clean shave and requiring the least fluid so only need a tiny little bottle/container/vial. Conditioner uses more but it's everywhere so you often don't even need to bring with you.

This is what I do - and I now have a suite of bottles and little funnels to make decanting the various lotions and potions easier! It’s a lot cheaper than travel size too. Although it probably won’t work for shaving cream!
