Travel plans 2024

Currently have 2 work trips to tokyo penciled in for Feb / Mar. The March trip is the only one booked as of right now because I saw a J rewards flight out of HND on QF, I'll take unicorns when I can find them.

Possible NZ or Bali getaway (and status for WP) in Jan. In May, I have a wedding to attend to in Shanghai which likely means tacking on a third country (TW possibly) to drop visa requirements. Also considering whether to do this as part of a L/DONE4 first leg ex JP.

August looking to hit up US (DC and NYC for now). If we do end up doing a rtw then most likely head back through EU (maybe Scandinavia then go back with AY).

Maybe SIN at the end of the year for work. And anything in between for work as the situation arises between CN , SG and JP.

May I ask where you stay in Cairns and PD?

Hilton in Cairns, probably with some time at The Reef Casino to use an Accor Plus benefit, then a few days at yet unselected hotels in Palm Cove and Port Douglas.

We usually stay at the Reef casino hotel, very comfortable and I like the view over the water.
In Palm Cove we’ve stayed at the Reef House a couple of times…not really fond of it for price …and at a top floor apartment at Horizons looking at the water which was great.

Port Douglas we stay at the Peninsula Hotel. OK but not as good under new management.

I’m always interested in finding different places to stay up there but have lots of boxes to tick.

We booked Monday 15/1 - now day ‘two’ in the new system
I am crossing everything that the usual winner is on day 1 continues ie the joker is on Day 1 and manage to avoid him
Also mens Semi 2 - always a good build up for that last spot - hoping Semi 1 places joker

Leaving Brisbane early April. Cruise to French Polynesia, Hawaii then on to Vancouver. QFF ward J flights on China Airlines from Vancouver - Taipei - Seoul. 5 nights in each. Then a short hop to Nth China. Trips to be planned from Nth China to Chengdu and Kunming. Train from Kunming into Laos. Award J flights home on China Airlines in late August.

Booked SYD-SIN-HAN-DAD-SGN-PNH-SGN-SIN-SYD for March-April. All accommodation booked over the last couple of days. Now to sit back and wait for it to happen.
Going for a week down the south coast of NSW in January too.

Booked my Havila voyage today for March.
Unfortunately for the dates we wanted there was no balcony rooms or suites on the 6 night Northbound voyage but balcony and suites were available on the 5 night Southbound journey. We really wanted the Northbound trip as the timings are far better and the excursions are also so much better. In the end I chose the Northbound and added some excursions. Booked a window room and have requested an upgrade if one becomes available.
Will spend a couple of days in Oslo and then travel to Bergen via train and the Flam railway. Couple of nights in Bergen pre voyage and then a couple of days in Kirkenes post voyage.
Then over to Prague for 4 nights before heading to Paris and Mauritius on the way home. Still haven’t worked out the nuts and bolts for the way over but looking likely to be 3-4 nights in the UAE and a couple of nights in Kuwait. That could all change if some different award seats appear late

USA in late Nov/early Dec - specifically MCO for WDW for The Teen's high school graduation, bribery offered by me in 2015 rather than the Teen going to Schoolies. Will cost me more, though.

In the past day, I've realised I either mis-calculated when US Thanksgiving is in 2024 OR mis-calculated the last day of yr 12. We should be able to avoid WDW in Thanksgiving week now!

I was going to be flying back from Eur to Aus via doh or sin but then Qantas recently did another reward seat release and there was an F award on a date which suited.
So now I'm flying back to Aus from Eur via US.

I'll prob spend 2-3 days in Helsinki and then I have 2 nights in LA before my Qantas flight home.
Other than that, after landing in London my plans remain open for the time being.

Heading to the Dolomites in Feb as usual, and then returning to Italy for the Venice Biennale in late April if I can wrangle work. I’ll head to the mainland for the Sydney Biennale in March. Maybe Bali or Vietnam for some Vitamin D during the long Tasmanian winter. Most travel plans are intrastate though. I love a good Tassie road trip.

Skiing. Mind you, I’ve also been there in summer and it’s a terrific place to walk. The wildflowers in June are extraordinary. I also love the mountain refugios where you can get a three course meal and beer for lunch mid-walk, or even overnight accommodation if you wish. It’s very different to Tassie mountains.

Ah of course, skiing. I watch a guy's Youtube channel who does multi day hikes on trails in Europe and he recently posted his Dolomites walk. Was spectacular. It looked like summer of course.

I was doing my periodic check to see if I could find something better than MEL-DEL-YVR-YYC in January, and saw a few flights showing MEL-SFO in J on UA. They were the wrong dates, but it led me to check the UA site, and I found a few around suitable dates. So I went to LifeMiles and they showed up there as well. I could also get LM to show SFO-YYC for the same dates, but MEL-YYC had zero availability. I called LM to see if they would put them on a single ticket, but no dice. But seeing as there is a reasonable layover in SFO, I grabbed them anyway, and will let travel insurance sort out mis-connects. An added bonus was that I could use an Aeroplan compensation voucher to pay the AC cancellation costs. Also, the A$ has depreciated relative to the CA$, so the refund for the taxes will also get a boost.

I like the mix of J seats I'll get, A380 are newer but 777 are bigger, and I haven't flown the 787-10...excite!

And because my last 270 SC were listed on my review date in 2023 and are showing as qualifying to retain, I'll only need 110SC before Sept 2024 to retain Platinum...what a lovely day I've had!

They released a heap two weeks ago, we got four J seats to Mel in July.
