You should have a look at the exclusions in the PDS - often there’s a general exclusion that the policy must be purchased before you leave Australia…

I have purchased after leaving australia, but havent had to make a claim.

There is generally a short waiting period, like 72 hours, and of course any ‘pre-existing’ issues … health or otherwise… won’t be covered.

But otherwise there aren’t any ‘gottchas’… it is as it says in the PDS.

Yearly travel insurance does the job for me, then I don’t have to worry.

True, but a google search will provide the companies that *do* provide post-departure insurance. With the caveats mentioned in my post.
