Hi Everyone,

Hope someone can help me with this one.

I have recently booked flights for next year using FF points ASA with Qantas. I paid using points plus using my ANZ card which then automatically kicks in with travel insurance once I have spent $250 on travel or accommodation.
I have found that they will pay us the value of the lost points if you must cacel your journey due to unforseen or unforeseeable circumstances outside your control.

What I am having trouble with is under the general policy exclusions they say they will not pay for losses directly or indirectly caused by: claims arising from cancellation, delays or rescheduling caused by carriers. I don't understand this statement.

Given the current situation with Qantas if this was happening next year when we plan to travel, would I be covered if everything was cancelled as it has been today?

Very confused

Well yes, you should be confused.

I've had relative success with this insurance coverage over the last 10 years or so, where I made 3 claims, and received a payout each time.

However, the first ploy from the insurance company when you claim is to deny everything. Then you must continue to press your claim (as long as it's within the coverage in the policy), and in the end, when they continue to deny your claim, just threaten them with going to the Insurance Ombudsman.

It's a painful process, but you will probably end up getting some of your claim paid, as long as the policy exclusions don't kill it off.

No idea, but from listening to a Choice spokesman the other day, neither do most lawyers. They said even one of their contract lawyers couldn't figure out what a certain policy covered. They are, however, generally fairly easy to pin down on the phone, so why not try calling and see?

TID, or Allianz, seemed to think they covered the action, as the rep told me to rebook as I saw fit and to claim any expenses incurred until my flights. She was very helpful, but I have not yet claimed and will post either way if I need to claim any difference between what QF cover and my out-of-pocket expense.

What are people's general experiences with this insurance?

For example, I'm going O/S for 6 months - North America, Caribbean (Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana) and possibly into Europe. The flights and a few other big items - internal flights and accom - have been or will be paid with ANZ plat. Is the insurance sufficient for this type of trip? Is it best to get secondary cover?

Obviously would be best to avoid that and its additional cost, but if I dislocate my dodgy shoulder in say, Guyana, am I screwed if I only have ANZ's Plat Card cover?
