Hello

We are returning to Sydney from Heathrow in economy (QANTAS). We have an iMAC (17") that we need to bring back with us.

While we DO have the packaging to check it in, we are wondering if anyone has any experience transporting it as carry on, in economy and specifically with QANTAS.

Our main question is how do the crews regard it (and refuse to accept it) and anyway, will it fit in the overhead locker?

The other question is how the security check in in Terminal 3, Heathrow would deal with on the security belt.

All ideas welcome!

Thanks

Take it on-board in a laptop bag / backpack and I don't see any issues.

OH doh!

Sorry - I should have pointed out - this is not a portable. It is a desktop with a non-removable stand

Thanks

Ah! It would depend on the weight and size of it. I dare say it may be heavier than 7kg, in which case you'd need to check it in. I've traveled with PC/Servers boxed up as checked luggage and haven't had any issues to this day *touch wood*

Hmmm - I think you may have just nailed it with the 7kg bit although I have travelled with much heavier as have you, by the sound of it! :)

All iMac stands are removable as they accept VESA mounts, but I would guess not easily removable for you.

If you have all the packaging, particularly the styrofoam, you should be safe to check it in, but I understand your reluctance to. Have you tried calling the airline and asking?

Hmm - Yes - I am reluctant to, I must admit

Yes - and we will. Just find the experience of people like you invaluable as well so thanks!

Don't forget that you might get pinged for the GST when you bring it into Aus, unless it is returning to Aus or cost you less than around $900 or you are travelling with enough people to equal the duty free limit.

Cheers,

JOBU

Its a good point. Fortunately it is returning to Australia and is several years old. As a complete side issue, when we first came over to the UK a friend travelling first class brought it (checked) with no problems anywhere along the way - including customs.

Checked is always an option but it probably puts us at high risk for excess baggage.

Have you looked into how much it'd cost to courier or simply air/ship it overseas? Might be another option.

if it's a few years old it might be worth less than the cost of the excess luggage/shipping.

ah yes - but cheaper than buying anther....nup - I want it to go back - its got years in it yet :) As far as alternative transport is concerned - yes - this will still be the best way to go.
