Transition from QF to VA

Just starting to use VA a bit more. Can anyone tell me if there is much difference between VA J domestic and VA J short haul international ie BNE-AKL in the 737's

There's very little difference. The hard product is the same (average) and the service is similar (good). The catering will be similar to what you get on longer domestic flights and the crew on those trans-Tasman flights are NZ-based.

Flew J on both recently, DRW to Perth. QF have better lounges, QF food was better, QF were more tentative (table cloths). QF better sparkling wine. VA are good, however I prefer QF.
