Transit LAX to NYC. Duty Free?

I will be transiting LAX on QF107 from SYD to NYC. I want to bring a particular wine to NYC. Will I be able to buy the wine duty free in SYD and keep for transit at LAX? Thanks

(Yes I am aware that SYD is not cheap for duty free wine, but I do not want in my checked in luggage)
