Hi all!

I am a FF of Thai only have one trip so far Melbourne to coughet.

Have booked another Melbourne to coughet for April with V australia.

I would like to get a decent status with OW or Star Alliance this year.

Is there any way to transfer points from both/either V Australia/Thai to another airline to qualify for either OW or SA?

Or does anyone have a better suggestion?

I'd rather have all the points in one place rather than spread all over the place.

I have another 2 trips for this year from MEL to LAX and MEL to coughet.

Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers

Hi Betty,
Unfortunately you won't be able to transfer points between programs directly. There are some hotels that allow you to transfer points into and then back to another airline, but often the conversion rates are poor, and some require a minimum number of points.

Note that with QF, you will not earn status based on your points. QF base their status on actual miles flown on aircraft (in the OW group).

AA allow for elite status based on points earned, but if you're not in the USA you're going to have problems earning a large number of points via any method but flying, as there are no CC's here that credit directly to AA (exception being Diners Club).

Thanks for that drewbles :)

I'm referring to miles flown only.

I have read previously somewhere...... that people have earned Gold Status with their FF programs, contacted another airline program and been given the same level status.

Do you think its possible to build up miles with velocity and then change it to AA or another airline?

Cheers!

OW and *A may try and kidnap their oppositions very FF's, but you'd have to be at least Plat, and fly 370 days a year.
Don't think Velocity would let you transfer 1 point to another FF group, no one else seems to do it.
TG are a good long-haul carrier, and if time is no big deal, you can fly from Aus to LAX via BKK, pick up more miles, and fly in J for much the same cost as VA direct, and Y is a 34inch pitch seat, 2" more than most others. TG are easier to redeem points with, and you don't need as many as say QF/VA for a flight. I've never had a problem with TG over the years, and recomend their service, and metal.

Cheers Dee

As a general rule, AA and QF do not do status matching (QF almost certainly never unless part of a big deal with a corporate).

It's more likely that Velocity will match QF/AA status than the other way around.

US Airlines are generally pretty receptive to status matching, but if you're based in AU, then your options are unfortunately limited. Most of us here are either QF or AA elite, with a proportion being both (we also have our NZ elites amongst the AFF masses, but in smaller numbers overall).

End of the day, the best way to get status on an airline is to earn it on that airline/alliance. Status matching can be done (I know UA will do it) but once matched, you then need to re-qualify anyway, so if you don't plan on swapping airlines, it's really not worth it. You're going to have to put in the hard yards at at least one airline (in Asiapac) to earn an elite level, so you may as well stick with the one carrier IMHO :)

If you want some sort of status with any alliance then you will need to be loyal to them rather than looking for the best fare from any old airline.

With the trips you have mentioned you would have come close to earning *Gold status with someone like Asiana or BMI. You flights to coughet on Thai and the flight to LAX on United.

Thai Royal Orchid Plus and SQ KrisFlyer are OK but miles expire after 3 years if you do not use them for an award.
