Hmm, I have just hit Plat with VA , mainly due to a couple of bus class flights with VS to HK. I have 250,000 points on Amex I can transfer. I prefer to use VA or their partner airlines now.

Do U think it's worth transferring over the Amex points, if I do, it's to VS not VA ? Any issues with that as it's a UK based airline , so points expire ?

It's a lot of points to stuff up if I make a bad decision. Thanks for helping this ff noob !
Cheers

VS Flying club miles have a 3 year expiry and any activity extends the expiry to 3 years from date of activity.

Personally I would keep the point in Amex MR and transfer over to airline partners as you need them. These promotions come along fairly regularly.

thanks John, appreciate the input, am glad to hear these come along fairly frequently.

Hm so I can transfer pretty much unlimited points (80,000 per 24 hours) from SPG to KF it seems

20000 SPG = 25000 KF

Seems too good am I missing something ?

PS: Just purchased 20K SPG for $525 which gets 25K KF

Yes you have missed something. The maximum SPG you can transfer is 79,999 points, but you only receive 5,000 bonus points for every 20,000 points transferred. Hence you are missing out on 5,000 bonus points and wasting the benefit of 19,999 points pre-transfer if you transfer 79,999. That is you will receive 15,000 bonus points no matter if you transfer 60,000 or 79,999 points. I would transfer 60,000 points each day to receive 75,000 points into my FF scheme.

Ah yes - 60,000 per day is better!

Totally forgot about my stash of SPG points sitting there and KF is a great option to redeem them! :D

Do people think buying points through donating multiple $150s (circa $100 after tax deduction) to MS for the 5000 points (6000 points after taking into account the transfer bonus) is worth it?

I think I am going to give this promotion a miss.

I am looking at using miles for Upper Class HKG-SYD on a Wednesday/Thursday night from June 2014 onwards and availability looks to be limited for the dates that interest me.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm thinking of transferring 120,000 for 2x Upper Class SYD-HKG.

What are the taxes like for this redemption and how is the flight compare to say CX.

Does this type of promotion for frequent flyer partners happen for bonus miles often?

Need to make a decision before end of month

cheers

taxes SYD-HKG return are around AUD380pp IIRC

A tad higher:

80,000 miles each Adult (1 total)
AUD 264.00 Operating Airline Fuel & Insurance Surcharge
AUD 125.26 Taxes, fees and charges
80,000 miles
+
AUD 394.26 Total (in miles & AUD)
Class = G Kingsford-Smith Airport to Hong Kong (Hong Kong International Airport)
Class = G Hong Kong (Hong Kong International Airport) to Kingsford-Smith Airport

For me syd-hkg Upper Class is the sweet spot for redeeming my vs miles in terms of points cost and availability. I often see 5+ award seats available on some flights which makes whole of family redemptions possible. I like the "relaxed British" attitude of the crew in general, and on occasions I have been able ti have a good conversation with flight crew on their break at the bar (OJ only for them, not for me)

Thanks for your feedback Knasty and for the tax calculations Markis

I don't need to fly VS SYD-HKG-SYD in the near future maybe in 2 years time. Should I transfer now or wait closer to the time? Do you think they will have this promotion again?

I am a bit torn here on what to do.

I had a flight on SQ metal earlier this year and it was at a time when I just re-made PPS and discovered that VS had a lifetime gold tier. Back then, I thought it was a fantastic idea to go for this so I ended up crediting the SQ flight to VS to end up with around 10k miles in my account, only to eventually realise after a few days that I would probably never use these VS miles since they don't allow J/F redemptions on SQ on the 77W/388 routes and the only actual flight that VS has from SYD is SYD-HKG-LHR route, which as a CX DM, I would prefer to fly on CX.

So I have around 10k miles with VS from that single SQ flight earlier this year in my VS account and while I was intending to just let them expire, these 25% transfer promotions are actually making me think twice whether I should transfer some points across to redeem them instead.

Any suggestions?

I came across an email of mine with 30% bonus early last year. And I think there have been others as well.

Personally I would wait.
