Hey guys, my partner just got a platinum commbank award card. Was wondering whether velocity or QF would be a better option for us. She doesn't have status although she might be getting US Plat/OW Sapphire and I'm already OW Sapphire and going for emerald next year. We mainly fly OW but we have points in both programs but obviously more with QF than Velocity. Is this a no brainer and straight to QF?

Additional point: I mainly hold the points in our FFPs so we would have to equate in the 4 yearly transferred allowed with QFF.

Velocity wins out if you want to get to USA - much lower fuel tax than QF and seems to be nearly always saver awards available outside peak periods.

QF seems better for flights to Asia and possible Europe.

I've been directing more of my spend towards Velocity points.

It doesn't hurt to have a foot in both camps. I guess it really depends what you want to use the points for redemption wise. The VA taxes are lower because they are just that - taxes, not carrier imposed fees, levies and surcharges on top of that.

If doing partner awards on QF eg for travel on AY, FJ etc the fees appear to be lower that those charged when the award ticket is on QF metal however not as low as VA awards.

I haven't done any Velocity awards on VA metal internationally however we've travelled twice doing a partner award on HA HNL/BNE and the cost was 32,500 points plus USD52.54 taxes pp the first time then 32,500 points plus USD37.74 taxes the second time. I believe the points needed for HNL/BNE has now increased to 37,500 with HNL/SYD costing 45,000 points.
