Transfer Sydney Domestic to Sydney International Terminal Option

Is there nothing to be said for the idea that one's time has a value? $6 for a comfortable and quick train seems to be somewhat superior to most of the options posted here.

Sure, it's all relative, but time is the only thing you cannot ever get more of.

Isnt the Opel airport fee around $12 on the train? Makes the Terminal shuttle bus seem reasonable and low hassle factor. Either that or Uber...

Catching the 400 bus involves an airport fee so is not really that much cheaper than the shuttle bus...
Card typeFareStation access feeTotal fare
Adult$2.36$2.00$4.36

The access fee is capped at $25 a week on Opal. For a one way peak trip your will pay $17.40 (fare plus gate fee) minus the Opal card discount on the fare. So I usually end up paying about $16.38 on my first trip of the week and about $13.38 for the return. The actually gate fee is $13.40, which is the charge on the first trip. The second trip is charged a gate fee of $11.60 ($25-$13.40).

Not sure about this $2 fee for the bus, the fare should be $2.10 only.

This is the bit I don't get about where these threads seem to end up heading. I'll almost always choose saving time over saving a few dollars.
Having said that the train is much more convenient when leaving T2 compared to T3.

As the train is likely to cost you ~$18 including surcharges, I think Uber or taxi would be a similar cost and would be much more comfortable (Uber over Taxi any day)

I just did an Uber estimate at http://uberestimate.com/

uberX: A$12-16

The train only costs that much if are going to/from the airport. For terminal transfers the fare is only around $6.

Also, there is no surcharge for taking the 400 bus between terminals. A fare of $2.10 sounds correct.

Quite correct. According to Transport Info - Public Transport Information for Sydney & NSW | transportnsw.info :

I just caught the transfer bus this morning and it was free. They just check that you have a valid ticket...

The train fare between terminals varies by time of day in the $5-6 range. The airport access fee is capped at $25 per week so using the train with an opal card gets a lot cheaper after the first return journey in a week. The weekly and Sunday travel caps also apply the the normal fare.
I've had train trips between terminals and from the city for free.

Same here never paid a cent just showed my tickets for an ongoing flight after checking in the luggage earlier on.

which isn't really what the OP was asking about. It also depends on what transfer bus you mean. Qantas and Virgin both offer a transfer service, in the case of Qantas a separate private bus. The public bus options are the T-bus and 400 bus both of which cost money without an airline provided transfer.

What is going to be the fastest option for a QF 8:30am Monday morning domestic arrival? Transfer bus, train or cab?

I'd probably lean towards the train, but it depends on how busy Qantas Gate 15 happens to be.

Lots of useful information here: Terminal Transfer | Go To and From | Sydney Airport

Opal Transfer between terminals:
Off-peak $4.78
Peak $5.38

Personally, I would prefer to catch the train compared to the T-Bus or public Bus 400, as the train is not dependent on traffic conditions. Qantas transfer bus travels airside, so is (only) dependent on tarmac traffic, while I'm pretty sure Virgin transfer travels public roads.

Afaik, taxis are not allowed to reject a ride, and they are allowed to jump the queue if they arrive back within a certain time, so really, they shouldn't be complaining too much.

If you are transferring to qfi then I'd use gate 15 and the QF transfer bus. I've never not been able to get on the next bus on domestic to international transfer. One Tuesday I was the only person for the bus at 8.30am

It would depend on the day. I've got off QF730 and been extremely lucky to get onto the first QF transfer bus. I decided to be involved in general chit chat with Nick Minchin to get on the bus. But there was at least another bus load of people who didn't make it. On the whole there probably isn't much in it. But it Gate 15 was full of people I'd personally head towards the train.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If you have a genuinely tight connection then you shouldn't have too much trouble politely requesting to staff that you get on the next available QF transfer bus. I've done this once (following a very delayed CBR departure). Have also happily held back when I had a long connection time but I could see several agitated pax arriving at gate 15. Only cutdown my F lounge time by 5 or 6 minutes so no big deal.

Note also that from 5-Sep, there are some changes to Opal.
- no more 8 then free, becomes 8 then 50%
- introduction of $2 rebate ($1 for non-adult cards) for any intermodal transfers.

Whilst its discussed above I also thought I'd set out the current Airport Gate fees (which only apply to trains). This applies in addition to the normal distance bands (starting at $3.38 peak for 0-10km and $2.36 off-peak)
- Airport - Airport - $2.
- Airport - Mascot/Green Sq - $5.40
- Airport - Other stations - $13.40 Adult / $12 Non-Adult
- All subject to a weekly $25 Adult Cap / $22.50 Non-Adult

Thus public airport transfers
- 400 bus - $2.10
- Train off-peak - $4.36
- Train peak - $5.38 (journey commencing Mon-Fri between 7-9am or 4-6.30pm)

And from the Domestic Airport to city

Current fares
Domestic - Wynyard (peak train) = 3.38 + 13.40 = $16.78
Domestic - Mascot (400 bus), Mascot - Wynyard (peak train) = 2.10 + 3.38 = $5.48 (saving $11.30)

However with Intermodal transfer (from 5-Sep)
Domestic - Mascot (400 bus), Mascot - Wynyard (peak train) = 2.10 + 3.38 - 2.00 = $3.48 (saving $13.30)

Deduct $1.02 for off-peak

Is there nothing to be said for the idea that one's time has a value? $6 for a comfortable and quick train seems to be somewhat superior to most of the options posted here.

Sure, it's all relative, but time is the only thing you cannot ever get more of.

Normally I would agree with you, however if you have say a 3 hour wait from arriving on one flight and departing on the next, time is rather irrelevant.

- Airport - Other stations - $13.40 Adult / $12 Non-Adult
- All subject to a weekly $25 Adult Cap / $22.50 Non-Adult
All very interesting. I've just learned that I can do the Int-Dom train journey for $3.18 (Opal Gold Card). I'm assuming then I could go anywhere on the transportnsw network for $7.40, if changing at Mascot (or $2.50 if taking the 400 bus).

However, it appears the station access fee for Green Square is $8.

Opal Transfer between terminals:
Off-peak $4.78
Peak $5.38

Opps... I got the wrong value from my Opal activity there.

As moa999 highlights, it's $4.36 for the off-peak transfer. $4.78 was a peak transfer with my weekly Gate Pass cap kicking-in part way through.
