Transfer in SIN between different carriers

Just for curiosity's sake, how much time would one have to allocate between connecting flights of 2 separate tickets. 4 hours? I know Singapore airport is quite swift but other airports?
Personally I would plan on a overnight stay to be sure.

Invariably the problem is not the airport processing time. Even a third world airport like Perth will get you outside in about an hour. However, there is always a good chance that your inbound flight will be delayed - it is around about this time that you start the cold sweats..........

PER's not third world, albeit it might look third world compared to some of our other capital city airports... with exception to HBA which really is 3rd world.

1 baggage carousel for QF/JQ, bag claim area not big enough to host flea circus in, and a QP that wouldn't look out of place in a regional airport.

Sorry to bang on about HBA again, I'll be grateful if I never visit there again.

It may be worth doing it through a travel agent rather than myself online if it will offer some protection.

What protection? This is the last thing I would be doing as you cannot assume the booking will all be on the one ticket. They may book it separately as two tickets just like you were going to the only difference being you will have paid the travel agent a hansome booking fee for the 'privilege'!

Also when you book through an agent, in a disrupt situation the airline may try to 'handball' you back to your travel agent if there's a 3rd party involved and I would question how helpful that agent may be at 0300 on a Sunday particularly if it's a certain chain I'm thinking about.

If you've booked direct with the airline they can't flick you or fob you off and must take care of you. The more budget the airline the less likely the chance of them transferring you to another airlines flight though.

Not sure what city you're in but ex DRW a quick check of the JQ website shows JQ57 DRW/SIN 1600/1900 on 13May returning 20May JQ62 2220/0430+1 costing AUD339.81 return per adult including taxes.

If it was me I would book a cheapie JQ fare online myself ex DRW to SIN for example, overnight in SIN both ways then do your separate fare on whatever airline ex SIN to LON or Europe. It may be worth checking cheap fares ex your capital city to Darwin & departing from there.

That eliminates any worry of a)missed connections due to flight delays and b) no need to claim baggage & recheck as you'd be overnighting each way.

Good luck with all the planning & let us know what you end up doing.

Cheers

Not at all. If you miss the flight and the fare has no refund for no-show they can simply tell you to buy a new ticket. If there is no protection, then there is no protection

I possibly didn't make myself clear. I wasn't talking about if you missed your next flight because your previous flight got in late. I was talking about if there is a delay, sometimes if it's a lengthy delay that airline will sometimes transfer people on to other airlines depending on their policy.

You would want to check the product disclosure statement from your travel insurance company very carefully to ensure you were covered for missed connections etc.

This would be extremely rare (and probably only in extremely exceptional circumstances).

Reasons airlines transfer pax to other airlines flights

This would be extremely rare (and probably only in extremely exceptional circumstances).

I guess it really depends what city you're in, but I've seen it happen regularly in Darwin particularly if a Jetstar flight is cancelled - all pax get transferred to QF. Being a remote base it does not have the frequency of flights seen at southern capital cities. It happens with DJ too where outbound BNE/DRW flight cancelled due to disruptive pax & therefore no plane for DRW/BNE flight so pax were transferred to red eye flight DRW/SYD/BNE.

I wouldn't say the circumstances are exceptional, situations include birdstrikes (traditional variety), birdstrikes (F/A's resigning on the spot after flight arrives from SIN) & therefore not enough FA's to crew onward domestic sector, crew out of hours to continue domestic sector, significant delay to flight that would've caused rolling delay to outbound flight later that day & 16hr delay on SGN/DRW/SYD flight so all joining pax for domestic sector had no plane.

It may be a DRW/MEL flight that has no crew so they will use SYD crew/plane if they know QF have enough seats to uplift pax.

Not always smooth sailing as JQ ground handler in DRW (Skystar) has to speak to JQ Ops in MEL who fax QF Ops in SYD with number of seats to book, QF Ops make group booking under particular JQ disrupted flight number then pax and QF wait while JQ Ops take hours to advise actual names of pax to QF.

The situation can be understandably frustrating when a QF flight closes at minus 30 for bags and still no names have been received from JQ Ops.
