I am planning on trying to catch the Air New Zealand 787-9 in December when it will be on the 09:00 (NZ103) Sydney service on Saturdays. My plan is the catch the 23:50 JQ service from Melbourne on Friday night which gets in to Auckland at 5:30 on Saturday morning. So this is a three and a half layover.

My question is can I check in online with Air New Zealand and go through the airport transfer instead of having to go through customs and then check in and go through customs again?

AirNZ do not have OLCI for international flights.

There is an AirNZ transfer desk airside at AKL International where you can check in with no luggage - somewhere near the low numbered gates IIRC.

Just use the international transfer facility.

Yep once you get off the plane you can go straight through the international transit, which is basically a security checkpoint back into the departure area, without having to clear customs etc. I have do it before - its easy to find.

Yes but I will have to check in.

Once through security head over to the 'international transfer desk' and they will issue a boarding pass.
